Randy Selby I stumbled on this by accident and thought I would share with everyone. He has quite the collection of videos to watch. I’m sure some members have watched his videos and know of Randy Selby. Some may know him personally? I’m a new fan. https://youtu.be/k2Z0cCMEmzA

His video(s) on long-range hunting are interesting.

I do watch every new video he comes out with. (Can be months.) I don't always agree with what he says and don't have his history and knowledge, but he is interesting. Like most old-timers he has definite opinions.

Yea it’s hard to agree on every matter with everyone. And by no means is he a great speaker. But he’s definitely very knowledgeable and interesting to listen to. I’ll definitely watch his whole collection.

All I can say is make your own YouTube videos and then we’ll compare and see what’s funny.

Ive watched his videos but I watch almost everything. He's rather opinionated, enouph so that it may cloud his thinking on some of the newer innovation. None the less I still enjoy his videos and they ussually bring a smile to my face along with a chuckle here and there.....
Lately I've been on a Ron Spomer kick! Now that fella is a character and looks toupher than rawhide as well.
As usual however our campfire gunwriter John Barsness/ muledeer is my favorite to learn interesting things from and by a fair margin! I always look to his posts with eager anticipation. Sometimes I even scroll ahead to find his answer....

Good bullets properly placed always work, but not everyone knows what good bullets are, or can reliably place them in the field

I've watched a few. Wasn't impressed. Why? He doesn't always have a full grasp on the idea behind what he's doing. For example, consider a video of his about developing a load. He makes heavy use of standard deviation to influence changes in powder charge and/or primers. What he doesn't get is calculated estimates of sd are random variables themselves, so the sd estimates he gets from three shots at a time are nearly meaningless.

Randy is the guy you would want to go to if SHTF. I guarantee he could get by without the internet and probably has a way to run his equipment when the power goes out. I don’t agree with everything that he says but I watch some of his videos. That generation of machinist/gun smith is about gone. We used to have one around here that if you had a part that was obsolete he could make it and it didn’t matter how small but he has passed on and the gunsmiths around now are just parts changers if they can order the parts.

I've watched a portion of a single video of his: " 6.5 Creedmoor Issues". I would have to say I wasn't particularly impressed. His format is very dry and not at all engaging. I also quit watching after a few minutes because honestly, I found his first few "criticisms" of the Creedmoor rather stupid. [Regarding the 6.5 Creedmoor] "There's an aspect to this, that there's no information on beyond a shop such as myselfs." He then goes on to talk about the Creedmoor having the issues of: 1) The first reamer he ever ordered was incorrectly made. It would have given too long of a throat and in order to be within 0.020" of the lands bullets would have to be loaded to 2.950" instead of 2.820". He admitted, he found factory rifles, such as Rugers, throated correctly and found that there was another reamer maker who made one with a correct throat. 2) The first lot of brass he ever used, had inconsistent dimensions (shoulder measurements IIRC) that he didn't notice for a number of years. Uh, I'm not sure how either of those is an issue indicative of a "cartridge problem" or an "issue with the 6.5 Creedmoor" itself. Maybe there is not information out there beyond his shop because he's talking about a single batch of brass and an incorrectly made reamer? After that, I quit watching. Wasn't looking for an afternoon nap and didn't think I could stay awake for the rest of the video. To each their own, but I wasn't suitably impressed enough to watch any thing of his any further.

We used to have one around here that if you had a part that was obsolete he could make it and it didn’t matter how small but he has passed on and the gunsmiths around now are just parts changers if they can order the parts. I'd go along with that.. My old buddy develops his loads the same way he has done since the 1950's. He works out a powder/bullet/primer and even case that gives him the smallest group. If a certain combo isn't working, he changes a 1/2 grain here or there, changes up the primer, etc. Doesn't even own a chronograph. Shoots 3 shot groups. Once he has the smallest groups he can get, he works out his dope chart to 800 yards and gets his "clicks" worked out. Not my way of going about it, but I will say, it works for him, as he is edging onto a 100 elk with a few out to over 600 yards with his old M70 300 Win.. But the difference from Randy to my old buddy is he embraces change, understands how BC can give you an advantage in FPS and drift at ranges and buys bullets that'll help him make those kills, while Randy thinks nothing has ever surpassed what we had 20 years ago.

I understand what you're saying. I'm not commenting on any particular method, rather the execution thereof.

I've used Randy for few projects over the past 8-10 years. Randy's a good 'smith. Randy is opinionated and taciturn. Like most 'smiths, things are done on his calendar, which seems to move slower than rest of the world. His wife Cathy is the customer service specialist and communications chief. She's a gem. If I recall right, Randy was trained by P O Ackley himself. Not a bad mentor.
