Better have a transfer case on standby. Just a matter of time before “pump rub” puts a hole in the factory case.

Aint no shame in preventative maintenance.

Do you name your trucks ?
Yes... "Rare" 1993 Cummins "Hare" Because she is CRAZY FAST and strong. 1998.5 24 valve "Bear" Because she is rubberized black and STRONG 1997 "Square" 1989 12 valve "Spare" Not shown is the 1996 2500 Cummins know as "Mare"... because she is the Old Grey Mare with a stupid number of miles on her. And "Izzy" (1998 Isuzu Trooper) that is about to experience pure pain come Spring. Nothing is purdy... but all are damn strong for my needs.
If you are not actively engaging EVERY enemy you encounter... you are allowing another to fight for you... and that is cowardice... plain and simple.

I'm driving a 22 year old Toyota Tundra with low miles. It will be in my estate sale, and as long as I can fix it, I will. I saw what they want for a new one, and just laughed

Better have a transfer case on standby. Just a matter of time before “pump rub” puts a hole in the factory case. yea.........I've heard that It's so common a preventative aftermarket upgrade kit is sold to keep it from happening. The GM transfer cases use a gear pump inside the case that is driven off the mainshaft. The pump forces oil to the planetary as well as the drive sprocket sleeve. Because the pump is driven by the shaft, the housing of the pump must 'float' in the rear housing. There are 5 tabs around the housing that fit into spots in the rear housing to position the pump. Over time, the pump can start to wear on the rear housing. GM installed a spring steel clip in the housing intended to prevent wear but the clip can break and be rendered useless. Being that the pump housing is aluminum and is a harder material than the magnesium rear housing, it can wear a hole in the rear housing and cause a very small leak. This leak is high enough in the case that it typically will not leak when vehicle is not moving and therefor not leaving any drops on the ground. Typically the condition is not found until there is transfer case damage from running the case out of fluid. If you repair this as a preventative measure, all you'll need is a upgrade kit. If you wait until it happens, you are sure to damage the clutch disc's in your transfer case due to low lube level. Most don't know it's occurring and run their transfer case completely dry and blow it. Then you're buying a complete new transfer case. If you are dealing with a high milage rig and chose to fix it before it happens, put new clutch disc in anyway when you're installing the upgrade kit. Your going to have the case out and torn down on the bench anyways. A new set of clutches ring in well under a 100 bucks, actually closer to $50. I learned this the hard way, had my transfer case in and out three times before I was done. See, Fixing the dreaded GM pump rub

I ended up having to put a new transfer case in mine, $1700. But I’m in the same boat as most everyone else. With the cost of a new one, I’ll run my 99’ until it simply won’t go anymore.

If you get your oil changed or you do it yourself, take a look at the tranfser case. You will see evidence of oil staining/running down on the rear of it. If it has started to rub through
