I was a NG flight medic in the late 80’s early 90’s. Most of the pilots I flew with were WO-4’s with NAM experience, they could fly the hell out of those Huey’s. We started getting blackhawks after Desert Shield. Most of the old guys hung it up. I requested to be removed from flight status after 3 near misses inside a year. I was on a Fire Department in my hometown in the 1980s. They had just started "life flights" in our area, and all the chopper pilots were Nam Vets. In those days, everything was new, so the state required the FD be wherever they landed if it wasn't an airport. Those pilots were some interesting characters. They sure could fly those things. One time they picked up a car accident victim up in the hills, and just like the photo shown on here, the pilot only had enough room on the side of the bank for one skid, so he set one on the road and held it there until they loaded up the patient. He had the respect of everyone involved.
