Plain sliced, book matched veneer.

Go with plastic like others mentioned. It will make a durable work surface, and you can get almost any wood veneer pattern you can think of.

Contact cement and a 1/4” laminate trimmer, and a couple hours of work.

Or say fuggit and paint it.

Leading edge (side edge of the top is the give away).

No real solution but to re-veneer or paint...

You could tile it... I've done similar.

Narrow crown staple down expanded metal lathe... LOTS OF STAPLES... then tile away... edges are the killer.

If you are not actively engaging EVERY enemy you encounter... you are allowing another to fight for you... and that is cowardice... plain and simple.

The way we used to fix stuff like that is either put a piece of plastic laminate like formica over it- glued down with contact cement and trim the edges flush, or do the same thing with a door skin piece, which is basically a veneer of a specific species- usually mahogany, but available in all kinds of wood types. Glue down with contact cement, cut close to the edge and use and edge trimmer to cut it flush with the edges of the desk. It will look like it was always there...

As Rock, and other have said, a new layer of veneer can be glued on.
