Hello: Acquired a Bolt action Sako AII that has a barrel chambered in 358 Win. A good cartridge in itself. How ever I have a niche to fill and I'm wanting more horse power. Can anyone recommend a gunsmith who has the reamers that can rechamber my barrel to either the 350 Rem or 358 WSM? Thanks!

Is that action even suitable for the diameter of either of those two cases?

yeah thats a no go with that action....bolt diameter is to small but you do have a great action there

I did not think of the bolt diameter, just case length.

Stay with the 358 thats a great caliber especially in your neck of the woods.

Thanks guys, decisions to be made. I was looking for a caliber to take to Alaska. Been there for caribou but next time moose and maybe a big bad bear will be on the menu. Not wanting a big kicker but I was thinking I could rechamber the Sako .358 win. to something more stout. The rifle itself has a very good barrel and composite stock. Maybe with the newer powders I could do up a hand load for the .358 Winny that could tackle a big bruin(?). Would that work?

Don’t know how long your barrel is, but I can easily get over 2500 FPS with a 225 Partition from my 20” .358. That’s with, I think, TAC. I’ll have to check on that. I switched to a 200-grain Accubond for deer, haven’t loaded the NP’s is a while.

I have 358's, 35 whelens, and 338 win mags. I personally wouldn't hesitate to take a 358 for moose or bears. 358 hits game hard.

A major concern I'd have with your proposed change is how well will a larger diameter case feed and extract when the rechambering is done? For your proposed use, problems with feeding and/or extraction would be a much bigger imposition than not having a couple hundred extra FPS. Further, you're going to loose mag well capacity, and I'd rather have more 358 rounds to cycle through than a bit of extra fps.

IMO, you found a beautiful and rare gun that will serve you well, and I'd have a hard time messing with it.

Your 358 will do the job on both bear and moose. I've shot both in Alaska and while I had a 338 at the time my moose was shot at 30 yards and the grizzly about 60.

All good advice. For the time being I'll just keep and use the rifle as is. I do have a 338-06 in the safe but I like the compactness and the way the 358 handles.

I've shot game with every caliber bigger and smaller than the 358 Win. ....didn't notice much or any difference it just works great....its a shame most don't know how heavy of a punch the 358 Win. carries.....
