Known problem with timer/controller. Replace
Plenty of info on the net.
A good dealer will replace for you. Most wont.
About $70 online.

500 - 550 max temp isn't great for steaks - if I were to buy another, this recteq intrigues me with the 750 degree max temp:

I bought one of these last December and use it a minimum of twice a week. It will keep temps from 250°F to 700°F. No regrets with my purchase.

We have an older medium and 4 yr old large Traeger. The smaller older one is far more reliable at everything. The larger newer one won’t run on the smoke setting without shutting off after 10 minutes (works fine if I turn the temp up). Both need a couple smoke tubes to get the level of smoke I prefer. Both get hot enough to grill steaks (the big one takes a lot longer to heat up). Temps stay pretty constant once you’re up to temp. In really cold weather, I have had to set at 250 to get 225. Are they perfect? No, but we’ve been able to adapt and make some great eats. I’ll look into replacing the board on the large one. When they finally die, I’ll upgrade to a Yoder or Recteq…..

It’s not a pellet but the BGE as a far superior tool for almost anything. I can do a 20 hr brisket smoke, cooks a Tbone at 700 degrees or do pizzas at high temp. More versatile and the food tastes way better (more moist and flavorful). Buy once and be done.

I've had a Yoder YS640 for over 7 years, using it 3-5 times a week. It's been AWSOME(!!). Other than one igniter and one thermocouple that broke(my fault) its been very trouble free and is very good at regulating the temp.
Once it's upto temp it controls the set temp within 10 degrees or less.
Since we've had it we almost never go out to eat...the food that comes off that grill is simply superb!!

It's not cheap but is built like a tank and will last several lifetimes. By once, cry once. You won't regret buying a Yoder.

Get a real pit and some real wood. You will thank yourself after.

Mesquite wood is best, pecan good too.

Why is it necessary to make something as simple and basic as cooking a hunk of meat so complicated (and expensive)? Og the Neanderthal probably had that little chore figured out a few millenia ago- - - - -and he gave his wife the job!

A lot of truth to that. A pellet grill doesn't give the flavor that a wood smoker does and a 500F pellet grill can't do steak.

BUT....it is so nice to be out fishing or hunting and being able to keep an eye on the meat temperature at the same time.

I have a Traeger and it also fluctuated temps like crazy. They'll "let you" buy the upgraded controller for $250. I went on line and bought an aftermarket one for $60. It works much better than OEM.

When it's time for a "do over" I will probably buy something different than a pellet grill.

I bought a RecTec about a month ago after using a Big Green Egg for over 20 years. So far the new smoker has been fantastic. My wife
and I have done a cook every weekend with great results. It does just as well as the BGE if not better but with far less in the way of having
to check the temperature constantly. With RecTec, you sync your cell phone to the unit.

We did baby back ribs yesterday at 275 degrees. Even with opening the grill to wrap and unwrap the ribs, there was never a temperature
fluctuation of more than 2 degrees. The ribs were delicious and just fell off the bone.
