No 30-30, not even a distant cousin to a 243 in deer killing performance, steel plate gun! And to all the genius' bullet selection doesn't mean nothing when they are not moving with enough authority to thump.

Have you heard of a handgun cartridge called the 30 Herrett? My father used a 14" barreled Contender so chambered and he killed deer with it just fine. He used bullets whose expansion characteristics suited the modest velocity.

Yea. It's not hard to kill a whitetail. 7.62x39 will do it just fine.

I would love to dabble in the Herrett cartridge I read about as a kid. I believe Bob Miculek wrote about it in Guns and Ammo in yhe 70’s and 80’s.

Mike was running his rifle at 3000fps. It is quick and accurate.

Three deer Through the ribs covers quite a bit of area .

My grandson uses the Hornady steel-cased 123gr SSTs I buy him. One deer hit a bit far back needed a finisher, but the 200-pounder he killed in 2020 went straight down at over 100 yards.

Wouldn’t be my choice for general purpose deer hunting use, but for stand-hunting at modest ranges, the evidence I have shows it’s just fine.

I’ve got a Howa Mini in 7.62x39 that shoots the PPU 123 grain soft point moa or better. I have taken it out a couple of times each of the past two deer seasons but have yet to get a shot. I am curious to see how it performs.

Always remember that you are unique, just like everyone else.
