Think all I have now are Rapala and Kershaw, fixed.

Had a cutco, one of my buddies who fishes a lot more than me has it now.

I have a Cutco and a Gerber. I like both of them and I do a chit load of salmon every year.

I bought a kershaw folder to keep in the boat and the darn think chipped where the lock is the second time I used it and won't stay open. I vote for rapala. I have2 and both are at least30 years old.

It's really hard to beat a USA made Dexter Russell. They are inexpensive, hold an edge pretty well and sharpen pretty easily for most people. Bubba is Chinese.

Dexter Russell

I have a million fillet knives but the ones I’m most careful with and always reach for are one of the dozen + DR knives of various profiles.

FWIW, you'll see far and away more Dexter Russel knives around the fish docks on the Gulf Coast than any other brand. More Victorinox by far in Alaska. Dexter's are prevalent in a lot of restaurants. When 17 bucks get you a very good USA made knife, it should be the clear choice. I suppose you can get better, but you can't get better bang for the buck.

Good post you hit the nail on the head. Norwegians were taught to use Forschner - Victorinox knives.

In my experience most filet knives at the docks in the PNW and Alaska that I’ve seen were far and away Dexter Russell. Bait knives are Victorinox but not as many filet knives are. IME

You’re right about bang for the buck. My buddy ran a boat in Westport and his favorite knife was a DR that he’s had from childhood. It started life as a 12” filet knife but had been sharpened so much that it was about 5”. He could whip through sea bass perfectly faster than anyone else I’ve seen and I’ve seen some crazy good filet-ers. 😁

Looks like Rapala is first, with Cutco and Dexter Russell also in the running. Will depend on whats available when I stop by the store. Thanks for the help.

We had a homemade knife made from a hacksaw blade, it likely got tossed out with the fish guts.

Picked up what looks like a new Cutco 5720 kv today at local pawn shop for $55. Orange handle. I plan on using it to rib instead of the electric Bubba.

I've had a few types of Rapala filet knives through several decades - and all are great knives.
I've also had a couple Schrade Uncle Henry filet knives that I really liked and others noted...

I also have a beautiful custom hand made filet knife/sheath - that is a safe queen.
