I have to have a metal frame pack. you cant see under all the junk is a newer pack with hydration bladder strapped over the old military aluminum frame, which is covered in camo duck tape. The leather belt is attached at the base and keeps weight off of shoulders also alows air to enter between my back when I lean back. If I have an animal down I can take off the pack and use the fram only if I choose. all in all I got about 12 bucks in the set up. I use it as my day pack also. just without half the junk
