Fire does strange things. I've seen entire neighborhoods burned to the ground and there will be a house right in the middle of them unscathed. Same with trees and vegetation.

Surprise, surprise Southern California is burning. They live in the middle of an ecosystem that has had periodic fires for thousands of years. If you live there, you should expect fires.
It would be like me being shocked when a tornado comes barreling through Central Alabama in April.

Maybe they are afraid of displacing a few rattle snakes or something.

Clearing brush and vegetation is a solution that seems to evade most in SoCal.
Maybe they are afraid of displacing a few rattle snakes or something. The area that is burning in Laguna Nigel is a High end area They manicure their yards and most of them pay Gardeners. There is no dead brush in that area at all. I have worked up in that area many times. I watched a Lady on YouTube that had video of several homes with Tile Roofs and Stucco walls burning and the exterior trees and shrubs looks green as could be. Something Screwy is going on for so many homes in an area to be burning and no trees and bushes.

One of my daughters lives in Laguna Nigel, she has been sending me pictures, for the last 2 days, fire has taken out some nice homes on the beach, so far the fire hasn't gotten close to her place, she has turned her house into a refugee center for people from her church that have been burned out, last night they picked up a 94 yr. old lady and her cat, she was standing in the street watching her house burn down. sad to see this happen to any one. Having Julio manicure your .35 acre lot isn't gonna do much for stopping a fire.

People surround their homes with non native vegetation that burns just as well as native stuff. They do do stupid things like build on top of natural chimneys full of brush. 10,000 square foot homes on 12,000 square foot lots. SoCal has been under wind alerts and warnings all week.
Lots of patio furniture clogging the back yards. All that has to happen is really just get one house going on those zero clearance houses. For the conspiracy theorists out there, know how I know you know nothing about fire behavior and fuel loads?

30 MPH winds carry embers pretty far, AND the embers get blown into the attic vents.
The wind fed embers ignite the wood frame in the attic and the house burns from the inside.
