Give me a 30/06 & a good 3x9 scope. I did that 50 years ago & never looked back. An excellent and timeless choice....Hb

If it'll hit a white five gallon bucket at fifty yards......it'll do!!
Even birds know not to land downwind!

I knew “around here” would mean different things to different folks.
Lots of good answers I’ve hunted with a lot of the things people mentioned.
I had a Pair of Savage 99s in 284. Still have a new in the box magazine for one that needs a home.
Last year I hunted with the Kimber 6.5 Creedmoor, as well as 6.5 PRC.
I killed a doe with an iron sighted 30-30,taken plenty of hogs but the doe was my first 30-30 deer.
I like to hunt with older rifles sometimes. Next year I want to use my 99 in 300 Savage, as well as my Pre 64 Featherweight in 270.

Ozark Alabama is on the other side of the dang state.
I’d rather poach closer to the house.

Also been a 308 fan. Got a BLR and a Savage 99 in 308.
Also a M77 Ultra Light Mark II. Can’t go wrong with a handy little 308 or 7mm/08.
My 7-08 is a Stainless Model Seven.

'Ole Reliable is a Rem 742 30-06, my first deer gun. Yeah, I know, "jamomatic", right? Well this one, and my dad's, both from the '70s, have both dumped a boxcar full of deer and neither one has ever hiccuped. She's all refinished now and retired to occasional range duties.
These days, the go to all rounder is either a Montana in 7-08, or a Ruger 77RL tanger rebarrelled to .260 Rem.

My heart's in the mountains, my heart is not here. My heart's in the mountains, chasing the deer.

Here in VT we sure like a sweet little 308 bolt and old schoolers would say a 760/7600 pump carbine in 30-06 would be the berries.

Light weight Bolt action mini action 6mm Arc seems to be very adiquit for my use. CZ 527 w 22" SS barrel 6mm ARC looks to be my long term Hunting rifle for years to come.

i do own a few rifles but if it went down to just one rifle/one cartridge it would be my 1953 pre-64 Winchester model 70 30-06 that was given to me from a excellent gunsmith who was in Germany during World WAR 2 as a young man , was a soldier and did get to meet General Eisenhower during the war in Germany. he also did his gunsmith training and education in Denver ,Colorado and was a very good friend of mine and hunter.
