Hello. A bit of background...I have been hunting with a Winchester 243 with a Leopold VX2 and a Savage 99 EG in 300 Savage with a Marbles peep for many years (20+). Unfortunately, my eyes are going south, and I find myself using the 243 most of the time now. The Savage is very accurate, but I can't see through the peep in low light. Most of my deer are taken very early in the am, or late in the pm. I can not longer see through the peep in low light.
I have never wanted to scope up the Savage, but I don't want to leave in the safe this fall. She is not tapped, but we have a great gunsmith in town, and I feel it's time. My son's are not into the classics, so I have no legacy to consider. I'd like to keep the classic look (dad had a 250 with a Weaver 4), but I need to gather light. I do not need a high power, just good light gathering capability.
Can you please recommend a combination (base and scope) that will at least attempt to keep the classic look, but help be keep her in the woods. I'd like to be less than $600 (not counting my gunsmiths expertise).
Thank you.

Drop me an email and I'll send all the details.

Drop me an email and I'll send all the details. I have one of Lightfoot's bases on my '51 EG 300. if Lightfoot can't get parts in time to get you one i would send you mine and then take th new one from Lightfoot whenever its ready. my hunting days are over so would be no problem. pm if interested.

I am a big fan of Lightfoot mounts. I even had one engraved for my 99K. Killed two deer with it in 2020.

Absolutely go with the lighfoot mount. Do not under any circumstances drill and tap that rifle. You will decrease the value considerably and will be no further ahead in the optics department. The lightfoot mount will do everything you want and will not mar the rifle in any way. You will love it.

I have a Lightfoot mount on my 1949 EG in 300 for years now. Mounted a refurbished steel tube Weaver K4 60B on it and it couldn't look more classic if it tried. The mount is true, was easy to sight in and has held zero with no adjustments for years. Previously had a Redfield tang peep which worked perfectly until my early 50's but your living the rest no need to explain. You can't go wrong with a Lightfoot mount.

For a scope you might check out Vintage Gun Scopes of Corvallis, Mt. I haven't used them yet but I have an old Weaver V4.5 I am going to send to them for optical refurbishment. They have a good selection and prices seem reasonable though I have'nt purchased a scope from them yet.
