Correct. NONE of them should have ever been allowed to fly in the operational world. Are there many that fly well? You bet, but it does not alter the fact we had to eviscerate the "warrior culture" and lower standards in order for them to make it and even then, it takes some doing. Ask youself this question: How come no females flying in the Blue Angels?

The Blue Angels aren't immune to political correctness either. Remember 1995 when the Navy made a huge deal out of having the first black CO of the Blues, Donnie Cochran. Cochran sucked so bad that there were fears he was going to kill the whole team so they only made it partly through the season before cancelling the rest of the shows. They had to fire Cochran (resigned for personal reasons) and bring in a prior CO Greg Wooldridge to fix things.

They came to Meridian that year and on Friday afternoon during their practice there were some strange maneuvers. E.G. they were doing their diamond loop and about half way through, the wingmen split off from the formation. All us old farts were watching and looking at each other going “WTF was that all about?” A little later there were some more maneuvers that just didn’t look right.

Later, I pulled aside one of the Blues who had been in the same Airwing with me on deployment and had been in one of the training squadrons with me “what happened?” He just shook his head and said the “Boss didn’t start the maneuver fast enough to get over the top with us hanging on the wing”.

None of were surprised to learn he had been replaced.

Another drawback. Tom Cruise is a shrimp, I bet he is 5-8.
Of course they want a big tall guy. I think Tom stands on a wooden crate in some of the close up scenes.

Suprised by the TC bromance here. The first Top Gun was ok. No more TC here since the midget thought he should be Jack Reacher 10 years ago.

Yes, Tom is a shrimp. But there is a reason that he has a net worth of $600 million, and you don't.

He has The Look.

In Top Gun he just looked great as a fighter pilot. Yes he had to stand on a wooden crate as he prepared to bang Kelly McGillis, but even that looked good on the silver screen.

And if you want to drill down, that scene was pure Hollywood anyway, as Kelly is a registered Lesbo and wouldn't in real life touch a naked man with a ten foot pole.

I didn't see any of the Jack Reacher films but am looking forward to Top Gun 2, my only concern is that, for a flyboy Tom is a geezer don't know if he is too old for the part.

April 12, 2009:

Top Gun actress Kelly McGillis has confirmed Hollywood's worst kept secret — she is a lesbian.

The 51-year-old, famous for playing Tom Cruise's love interest in the film about a fighter pilot training school, has long been the subject of rumours about her sexuality but has always denied being gay.

She is currently single and came out in an interview with lesbian website Shewired.com.

McGillis said her next partner would "definitely be a woman". "I'm done with the man thing."

Our flight club is having a private screening tonight as I type this and I'm here at work.

I'll definitely go see it on the big screen. Have to wonder who doesn't enjoy a movie about fast jets and cool motorcycles. The first was an absolute classic from day one. It recruited a lot of people for the Navy and sold a lot of Kawasakis.

I do a lot of cool stuff in a Super Cub and a 182, but would have loved to have the power of those jets at my control when I was young and in my prime.

MTgunner: Sheesh - I admit openly that Mr. Cruise is afucking liberal - but I draw the line at forsaking my beloved movie going over politics.
Life is to short!
I thought Mr. Cruise was outstanding in the first Top Gun and am looking forward to "experiencing" Top Gun II.
As long as some here are piling on Mr. Cruise I have a "trivia" question regarding Mr. Cruise's "anatomy".
What physical aberration does the movie star Tom Cruise share with a previous generations male movie star from the 1950's & 1960's = Cary Grant?
Answer below:

Answer: Both Tom Cruise and Cary Grant had only "one" front top tooth!
They were both born with this unusual aberration.
Cary Grant NEVER smiled (a toothy smile) in any of his movies and young Mr. Cruise (if you look closely!) in his early movies you can see his one front tooth lines up with the philtrum (centerline groove of the upper lip) on his upper lip!
Over the decades his "tooth people" have worked on this one front tooth situation/condition and it is much less noticeable nowadays - most everyone I know, of the female persuasion, thinks Mr. Cruise is the cat's meow though!

Tom Cruise is in some pretty good sci-fi movies. I enjoyed Edge of Tomorrow and Oblivion. Went in with low expectations but got my money’s worth.

Hmmm, what was it you didn't like? Jets? Motorcycles? Leather jackets? Sex with older women?
I still picture myself as cool as Maverick when I ride my motorcycle up to my airplane and take to the sky then go home and have sex with an older woman after a few beers. It never gets old, even if I do.

As far as TC goes, what I know is he makes a decent movie, rides a lot of cool motorcycles and flies a lot of neat planes. Beyond that, I don't know or care. I watch a movie for the movie, not the people behind the character.

Crow, I was in N3/5 in the Pentagon when it happened but had a lot of comms with the old OP-05 and the word was Cochran KNEW he couldn't hack it so he voluntarily resigned...for what it's worth..

I saw it last night. Same plot (with a little Star Wars thrown in), same jokes and same music as the first one, but it was still worth watching.

So did you change the narrative? Or wrote and published the truth of the situation?

The narrative of "pilot error" was eventually corrected, but like it happens in the media, the "correction" is low key and on the "last page" in small print.

So just how "inclusive" was the movie?

1 female, one Hispanic, couple POC for pilots.

Nothing in the plot about race, nothing about adversity, diversity or sexuality.

It's a straight up movie like we used to have - some actors look like me, some don't but it has nothing to do with the plot/film.

Where I was disappointed in the film - I wanted more air to air and dogfighting. Jerry Bruckheimer said it would be "a love letter to aviation" and in ways it is. But it's more about showing off the G forces the pilots endure than air to air combat. There's some in it but not as much as I would have preferred.

It's really a movie about letting everyone know Maverick ends up "ok" with Goose's death and his exit from the Navy. After one last mission of course that teaches him all of this.

Yes - there's a cameo by his original Kawasaki and some screen time of the Kawasaki H2. (310hp supercharged crotch rocket). Mustang P51 makes it in at the end too but mostly about the F18.

Two thumbs up. Surprised at how entertaining it actually was. Did not have high hopes as sequels can be hit or miss, usually miss. What happened to Kelly McGillis? Well just google what she looks like now........Penny Benjamin was the right choice.
