Walking toward the viewer.
Her feet are even with the nearest pair of the horse’s hooves. So if they are walking away she would be leading the horse from alongside the horse’s butt.

Horse might be in a hurry to get outside and is leading her. The question of who is leading and who is being led can get even more interesting. Maybe the lady is leading the horse to water. In this case, we could be looking at the personification of "You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink". Maybe the horse is leading a female who is a lady in name only. In this case, we could be looking at the personification of "You can lead a whore to culture, but you can't make her think."
