I've been chatting lately with Chapuis about all things .450/400 NE 3".

Yesterday they pinged me to say their supply of ammunition for barrel regulation has become so uncertain they've stopped taking orders for that cartridge.

I've no doubt it's the same situation for the other European builders of double rifles.

I may still go ahead and search out one that's already here from across the pond as I almost have a life time supply of components. Just need to bulk up on DGX Bonded.

I'll likely know by EOM.

Why is that particular cartridge in short supply over other Nitro Express rounds?

I ask as I shoot that round.

I used to have a William Evans in 450/400 but mine was the 3 1/4 version. That ammo was always hard to find and the only source I ever found was Kynoch and it was $11 a round. I did manage to scrounge up about 100 cases and had Huntington's make me a set of dies. It was just a matter of playing with powder charges to get the velocity right for regulation and I was in business. But in a fit of extreme stupidity I sold the rifle.

I've been shooting that cartridge in a #1 since 2007, so I've pretty much got the whole reloading thing down pat. whistle

Why doesn't Hornady produce more of the brass and ammo? Dunno. confused I have to assume it's a matter of priorities.

I can recall when the .500/.416 NE 3-1/4" round came out people simply couldn't get the ammo and ended up ordering doubles in 450/400 instead, which the ammo was then plentiful.

Today the situation is reversed. In any case, I do know the rifle manufacturers are "providing feedback" to Hornady...

I load for my Jeffery's. 60 grains of 3031 regulates on my gun nicely with Woodleigh's. An elephant and a few cape buffalo will attest to its effectiveness!

For my #1 my load is right out of the Hornady manual.

Back before DGX Bonded, I loaded 82.3 grains H4831SC for 2050 fps. When DGX became bonded I backed off 0.1 grain for the same MV.

It's accounted for 1 cow elk in the scrub aspen between 35 - 40 yards, and 1 black bear too busy feeding on hazel nuts to notice me at just a bit over 100 yards.

Those older 400 grain softs killed regular stuff good!

Folks have said R15 results in less recoil, but I never could tell the difference, so I've stuck with H4831SC

I've been holding on to my Weldcore stash for the someday double...
