LOL. Yep. Or bailing wire and some irrigation pipe. 😜

Sam, that’ll buff right out.

Sam, Dad used to always bitch at me for plowing too close to the fence. But he was the only one that ever hooked one with a plow.
Pissed him off one day when he said that and I told him I plowed a lot straighter than he did. 🤠

I've had some ranchers ask why I don't shred closer to the fence lines...

Oh, half a foot away from the fence isn't close enough? whistle

I swear some think I ought to be cutting under the bottom wire.

Grandad wasnt too lucky Sam.

He had 5 boys and a bunch of grandsons.

I think the tractor actually steered better after the steering sector "adjustment" but he never did thank us for it.

It didnt matter i dont guess because we hooked it to a big wooden sled one Friday evening and went through a mile of woods to camp out by the pond.

We would catch and fry little perch and leopard frogs in a skillet on the coals of a fire and pitch foot long yellow field corn in the green shucks in the coals too. I dont know how we knew when they were done and it took no longer than when they smelled good if we were hungry.
They always tasted great.

Fry the perch real crispy and eat bones and all.

Next morning 11 year old Michael unhitched the sled and practiced his tractor driving. He turned before hitting the edge of the steep banked branch that led to the pond and the tractor rolled down the streep bank.

One think about Michael was that he was is quick as
a cat squirrel when he wanted to be.
This was a time he wanted to be his fastest.
He made a big diving leap from the tractor seat and hit that creek like an otter.
Came up 15 - 20 feet on the other side. Said he could hear the crash and splash from the other side.

Man, we sure hated to go back to the farmhouse that Saturday evening.
We had to pick pastures of bitterweed for two weeks when we werent turning the pea vines for Grandad and Ole Bill, our plow/cow/camping Tennessee Traveler.

Grandad had got him as a colt and trained him to plow and gee and haw. He had been a logger and haf trained his team to work in the woods by voice commands. Now if you get a horse or mule that likes to back up in its traces rather than pull when hot, just blindfold it and lead it up to a deep branch and turn it away. Hook the single tree to a chain tied to a tree across the branch.
When Nelly hit the load and decided to back up, she was cured of that trick.

Often 4 5 of us boys would ride hOle Bill bareback to the pond to swim.
Once Luther, Johnny, Samny, Chick (short for Chicken.Schiett) and I all rode him a mile to the pond to swim in the evening. I was the youngest and had to sit at the back.To keep from sliding off i had to reach behind and grab the base of Ole Bills tail slide back on my hands and then i could enjoy the ride.

He had a mile eating fox trot when not so loaded down but took it slow and easy with our kids.

I guess he got a little hot that day and when we got to the pond as he lowered his head to drink he just gave a goid kick and we all landed in the drink

It was a sad time when Ole Bill passed at the ripe old age of 25 iirc.

I thought swept exhaust on farm tractors was a thing. Ya ain't a rookie, Sam...in fact, you're a trendsetter.

Just a rogue tree branch? It happened to me once when i was a kid. One of those flap exhaust things on the tractor. Small oak limb caught in it and broke the turbo pipe

You need to find one of those old round ouart oil cans and cut the top out of it. Seeing how high could blow one of those in the air at start up was a morning ritual when I was a teenager. Followed by getting off my tractor and getting it so I had something to cover my exhaust at quitting time. grin

Gentlemen, thank you for all the great replies.

I am now safely at home and undistracted(new word?).

Brad, it is indeed beer time.

Viking, that ol' boy is an 875.

Toe, I saw the branch and like 1000 times before figured it would bend and flip outta the way. It caught the rain flap and bent the rotten old pipe right off.

Jim, yep.

We started a couple weeks ago, got sidetracked with a little rain and branding and sorting pairs and now back at it. Only 60 acres but it's been a pain in the ass.

Had the fields pre-worked and looking good but the latest batch of weeds came up before we could finish, so I hit the un-planted sections again with the toolbar.

It's later than hell but we had to move the cows across the corn fields to get to the corral and didn't want them destroying the corn so we delayed planting. Just a screwed up deal turning cows out this late but at least there's green grass.

Not whining!
