Its going to need a transmission sooner or later... I asked one of my previous mechanics, who specializes in Hondas, about the older Pilots, Ridgelines, and Odyssey vans. He said that he wouldn't count on the transmission lasting long in any of them. He said the transmission in the cars back then were very reliable and durable, but not in the bigger Honda vehicles. Reason I asked the mechanic was because a friend was shopping for one, and it was a common concern back then. I don't have any personal experience with any of them though. . I know of 2 people with older Odyssey vans that have had their transmissions go at 100k or a little over. They have made them smaller and most likely lighter in the following years.

OEH,
That's interesting for sure. The independent Honda mechanic that I mentioned earlier said that the transmissions in the heavier van and SUV of that vintage (compared to the lighter Honda cars) were good for maybe 100k to 150k. It's been many years since we talked about it, but from what I recall his opinion was that Honda adapted the transmission design from their cars to the van and SUV. Even though he specialized in Hondas, he told me to buy another make/model instead of the Pilot/Odyssey/Ridgeline.
That stated, I don't know what were the root causes of those failures. Maybe just a T/C?

Jason Jason, They also had an issue with tires blowing out because they were running passenger type tires(for a smooth ride) in a very heavy almost truck like weight van. I worked with a guy driving his Honda Odyssey on I77 and it blew a rear tire, he had his entire family in the van, luckily no one was hurt. Ed
