Today I was contacted about a boxed takedown rifle that has a 410, 303, 300 barrels all in a box, was this ever made or did someone cobble this together.

They did make a boxed set with a 300 and 410. Before the set came out I think you could buy a 410 barrel. There are probably a lot more sets out there than they actually made. I saw one at an auction, over 10 years ago, the auctioneer said was factory. It was in a 70's generic box with two thumb wheel pad locks. Not original, and it sold for over $3000. The guys that have pics of real sets will be along. But, buyer beware. People will stick a 410 barrel with a 300 and try to get cased prices just because they found a 410 barrel.

I'm not greedy, I just want one of each.

99% it's put together. Nothing Savage is 100%.

Is the case Savage?

Savage did produce some 1899's before WWI with 2 and possibly 3 barrels. I don't think they included a case. All the post WWI cases I've seen only have slots for one rifle barrel and one shotgun barrel.
My cased set is very early and is pictured on page 64 of my book.
There is a great variety of factory cases. I'm pretty the set mentioned by the OP isn't factory. Pics of this outfit would be nice. With Savage Never say Never.

I think that if there were any factory 3 barrels sets they most likely would have been pre WW1 with a 25-35 barrel, 303 barrel and shotgun barrel.

No?

A few pics would likely indicate if factory "cobble" or owner "cobble".
Known 2 barrel sets are pretty rare IMO. A 3 barrel set? hmmm..... possible but not probable. The burden of proof is with the owner. Do all the barrel combinations have proper fit, indexing and headspace??
Beyond that the sum of the parts with some condition has some value.

Just to clarify, the reference to "known 2 barrel sets" is with respect to a combo rifle offering vs. the cased 300/410 set.

Any set with a 300 barrel all but eliminates the possibility of it being a 3 barrel set. At least for me. Somebody would have to prove it to me.

Going by the ad, does that means a 303 rotor will feed 25-35 or does it mean a 25-35 rotor will handle 303s?

It looks like the 25-35 is compatible with the 303 and 30-30. But the 303 not with the 30-30.

Thats an educated WAG.

So the question is are those individual guns and a collection of other barrels in the same picture?

Or are they factory 3 barrel sets?

It's been my experience that a .22HP/.25-35 rotor (one and the same IMO) will feed .30-30&.303 for two maybe three shots. After that the angle of release is foiled by the cartridge guide.

That's interesting because I've got rotors stamped 22HP and 303 and I'll be damned if I can see the differences in them.

The 300 and 410 brls are later production than the .250 that is why it has two forearms.

A keen eye. Notice the different style front sights. I see it now. No way a "set"

Hmmm. Never tried feeding a "lesser" cartridge through a .303 rotor. Never did a a side by side comparison either. Supports what I've often said- it's not necessarily the rotor...

That case set of Loggah's is just beautiful it must have sat in a dark cupboard for many years, is there a story behind it?

I suspect the majority of these 3 barrel "sets" are not "sets" at all, but rather a rifle with some additional accumulated barrels.

Potential verification could include:
1) a factory letter stating the additional barrels/calibers
2) barrels serialized to the receiver
3) verification of barrel stamps to insure correct time period
4) verification of front sights to insure correct time period
5) other?

And if seen/found, verifying the original/correct barrel may be difficult without a factory letter.

Some here have 5 gallon buckets of extra barrels and could make many "multi-barrel" sets. smile
