No idea. It has 19k on the clock.

Problem with early tensioner shoe wear was rough edges on chain. Burnished chain solved that. Otherwise about 50k miles is a good time to service tensioner springs for TwinCams that do not have the hydraulic tensioner cam plate.

Good practice is to cut oil filter can off and examine guts at engine oil service. I do this on current FLHT and prior '05 FXD I had. Never found any metal or tensioner shoe material in filter though.
My kid’s Low Rider will probably be prone to this issue as well. He only has 10k on it and doesn’t ride it much. We’ll have them checked out once we get some miles on them.

The cool thing is - as long as you're in there, may as well put cams in... lol

I used to enjoy riding dirt bikes. I bought one a few years ago, and as I was flying over the handlebars, I realized I was too old, fat, and out of shape to be doing that any longer. I think I’ll stick to cruisers now.

Mine is plenty strong as it is, and I enjoy the 50MPG. I just want to see if I can actually wear one out.

Haven't had a bike in a coons age.

But...I picked up a '74 CT-90 a little while back for a song. It has the two speed gearbox and centrifugal clutch.

I'm putting mirrors and blinkers on it right now to make it street legal. It's titled, licensed, has a plate, and is almost ready to roll.

Should be able to get somewhere around 80 MPG on that hawg, plus I'll get style points for my pony tail sticking through the back of the helmet. grin

Yes - don't know why I typed 2 speed, that wasn't real accurate.

Hi/low range it is.

Someday maybe I'll get a real bike again like some of those in the thread, but for now I'll just have fun with my new little toy. Should be fun putting around Forest Service roads and such also.

6’ and slim. A 1200 Sportster would be plenty of bike, you’d just have to make sure it was comfortable for you.

I’m 5’10” and 220, and I prefer to ride the Sportster to my bike if mama isn’t riding behind me.

There’s really not much size difference between the Sportster and Softail frames except the Softail is longer. There is a noticeable weight difference however.

Thanks
Wife wouldn't be an issue for me[her uncle died riding].

It would mostly be short rides in the country and to work on blue sky days if I ever get another.

Having been near 40 years since I did much riding I've been hesitant to pull the trigger.

Hold out for a 1200 and don’t settle for a cheaper 883.

My kid bought his last winter for $2900! It only had 5k miles on it. Ran great until the weather warmed up. Then it started spitting and sputtering like the choke was on. I never could figure out what it was. Took it to a mechanic. He kept it for a long tim. He also had a fit with it. He finally figured it out.

The fuel petcock contains a redundant system to prevent fuel leakage. There is a vacuum line from it to the carb. It won’t open to allow gas to run through it unless the carb is sucking. When it got hot, this thing was feeding gas through the vacuum line into the carburetor.

A new petcock and bike is good as new! He stole it just because the owner had no idea what was wrong with it and knew he could pawn it off when the weather was cold. It’s a $5k bike easy. LOL!!!

I can tell you from experience, a Sportster is not for you.

My best friend from High School bought one of the 81 models. He was killed on it 3 days later.

I had a 1980 Kawasaki KZ 1000, sold it a few days after I had to be a pallbearer at his funeral.

I yearned for a KZ 1000 as a kid. Lucky I never found one.

My gunsmith owns a Triumph.

I haven't owned a bike since '81, but I keep my license current "just in case".

"Just in case" is becoming less and less likely.
