Inlaws are constantly hitting casinos.

FIL[may he RIP] had a fairly good system.
He had a set amount of 'gamble money' for each day.
When the 'gamble money' was done for the day he was as well.

Winnings went in his pocket and were not 're-invested', totally separate monies.
It didn't matter if he was on a losing streak or a roll, when that gamble money was gone he was done.

Casinos count on you gambling with any winnings.

He normally came home after a week slightly ahead.

We went to a Cirque de Salais show which was great. Had 2 of the best dinners ever. Did a lot of shopping at the outlets and generally walked around the Venecian.

I had a much better time than I would have expected and would not be opposed to going back.

Obviously the place is built to attract gamblers so that they will leave their fortunes on the tables. And this is what my question is: for those of you that enjoy the experience of going to gamble, and typically losing lots of money.... what is it about the experience that makes it worth the longterm monetary loss? How do you justify the expense of it?

Just curious...

Regardless of how you want to amplify the attraction of gambling, it is an addiction that ruins many lives. Vegas has capitalized on the nature of man that is wanting a big return in a small investment. Montana has brought the convenience of casinos to the parking lots of nearly every town, and they take all that money from people that keep thinking they can beat the odds against the house.

It’s funny how you hear all the stories of people that are ahead of their gambling investment, but the lights in Vegas are paid for with all those dreams of fast wealth…

I always looked at like this:

The casino does not need my money as much as I need my money.

Entertainment. If you don’t get stupid and win once in a while it can be fun. Hadn’t gone for about 6 months so the wife and I went for supper and a few slots. I had just about lost my 250 limit when I hit ten grand. Wife informed me we are getting new carpet.lol. Edk

Grew up around gambling. Seen enough of it that I never have had any desire to gamble. Dad was what you might call a semi-pro gambler. Most of his gambling was private kitchen table and back room bar gambling.

Only way to be a consistent winner is to sway the odds in your favor, ...which he did. Electromagnet for craps, marked decks of cards, etc., etc. He even had the stuff to mark your fresh deck of cards, that you bought and opened yourself, while playing in your game. I still have the little catalog he used to order all his 'odds swaying' gambling stuff from -- catalog played all their merchandise off as 'Magician' supplies... even sold punch boards with 'keys' to winner punch placements.

No such thing as friends to serious gamblers. Seen him clean 'friends' out time after time, often taking their whole pay check, then loan them a few bucks to get by on till next payday. They'd almost always be back and do a repeat next payday.

Lots of highs, lots of lows...

I've read, HL Hunt started his fortune playing poker at logging camps on payday.
I'll think he was sober.

Vegas is fun, and exciting. We don't try to justify anything when we go. It is our money and if we choose to risk losing it that is our choice. The money in our wallets is not expected to make it back home so we pizz it away and dont worry about it. Sometimes we come home with more money than what we left with. Funny how things go in a circle. We usually fund the entire trip using the rebates from our credit card purchases.
Great food, exciting times, good room service.
Whats not to like?

My wife and her whole family like gambling. I don't understand the entertainment of losing money most of the time.

I only go to Deadwood once a yr. I have a set amount each day I plan to loose. I'm there for the entertainment not to get rich. I've only had 1 weekend where I came out way ahead. Everytime I won, I put my chips in my left pocket and never took them out until I hit the safe in the room. Never reinvested so to speak. It seems I couldn't loose and I never kept track what was in the safe. Sunday morning we cashed those chips in at several casinos and I was pleasantly surprised I was up 2000 after 3 days. I budget 500 for the wife and I for the whole day which includes all food, drinks and any other entertainment. I bring that cash and will not hit the atm. I guess I gamble everyday when I walk out the door as my profession is a farmer/rancher so the casinos aren't that big of a draw to me. I do like black jack though.
