04 Tahoe 188K miles
Keeping and going to start restoring it a bit

Has the 'autoride' air lift system

Compressor is half way tits up

Thinking I'll just go 'standard' good shocks

This in Virginia[state inspections], when the system isn't working I get 'service ride control' on dash
One inspection station failed it due to this

Bilstein seems to be the consensus as far as shocks
But thinking that I need a workaround[delete] for the computer so it isn't throwing the code.

Feel your pain on this one. Wife had 2001 Yukon with premium ride suspension. Regular shocks they weren’t!! Cost me $900 just for the shocks from Rock Auto. Stealership from my BIL was $1400. These shocks were used in conjunction of the rear coils and the front torsion bars. You could not compress them by hand. I had to connect the top bolt and use a floor Jack to compress them to get the bottom bolt in. Wish I had an answer for an auto ride delete, but I don’t. New pump assembly and the correct shocks for you Tahoe from rock auto would run you around $1300 give or take. I have found RA to be the bomb on suspension parts. But shipping sometimes doesn’t make them the best choice at times. Rebuilt my old dodge pickup front end and a Honda Odyssey van front end with their parts. Just have to make sure shipping doesn’t eat up all the savings. Local NAPA is more expensive , but I don’t pay shipping.

Just did some researching and found what you are saying BLG, there's a lot more to doing this than just 'buying shocks' it appears.
May just have to leave as-is, and dig into the compressor issue.
I've replaced a couple of the tiny pencil sized levelers @ about $150 pop over the years.

Thanks

can't you just delete the factory system ?

Use regular components ?

Toyota/Lexus use air/hydralic systems

Simple 'Delete'

The 'self leveling' thing seems to be an issue that is quite expensive to deal with.

Probably 150K of the miles on it are interstate.
We bought the thing new and it's in great condition and a dream to drive.
The plan is to run it out to 300K miles[I hope]

It's actually very clean for a 18YO vehicle, mostly kept under roof.

Air ride had a known issue. Moisture is its enemy. Sure there are ways around the suspension, but that dang computater needs “fixin” to do it.

Good luck

Going to have to talk to somebody that knows how to get around the electronic leveling system.
I sent a query to Bilstein[that's a starting point].
