As others have stated you'll sacrifice a bit of extra velocity that won't make a bit of difference at any reasonable range and maybe a bit louder than a longer tube but again how much? They're a lot of killer in a handy rifle.

I had a 22" .25/06 for awhile, and it still killed stuff. It was a loud rascal, too, but when you're shooting at a deer (or coyote, or whatever), you don't notice it. Would it have been better with a 24" barrel? Not that the deer could tell. After all, plenty of deer fall every year with a .257 Roberts, with essentially the same velocity, right?

I don't have a 20" barreled .270 Win. but I have a 20" Remington 660 in .308 Win., a Ruger M77RSI 18.5" barrel also a .308 Win.. Many years back I had a an 18.5" 1903 Springfield that I used in the thick forests of northwest California. It too was loud as hell. These days my hunting rifles mostly have 24" barrels with a few 26" gun to flavor the pot. The 26" guns are Ruger #1s so they're no longer that a 24" gun. They may be a bit quieter but they're still way too loud. PJ.

Have had a Win. 70 Carbine, 20” for years. Gradually moved on to other calibers. Killed a good many deer here in MS. Mostly short range but fine for the occasional longer shot. Never noticed if much louder. Really handy for tree stands. Might have to get it out this year.

I have a Sako Fiber Handy. McMillan fiberglass stock from the factory and a 20" barrel. Great in a tree stand. Haven't noticed extra noise but use plugs at the range. It kills stuff DEAD! like a 270 actually! Rick

I have 2 short barrel 270s, a 77 RSI with an 18.5" barrel and a 760 with the barrel cut back to 19". Both are loud and produce a blinding muzzle flash in low light conditions, but they are handy and when I'm concentrating on a target I don't notice the noise or muzzle flash. That said, I find the 24" barrel on my CLR more user friendly in the muzzle blast and flash departments, but noticeably less handy in tight cover. Compromise is a fact of life found nearly everywhere.

I like the 22” barrels a lot better than 20”, 24” even more.

I can't understand why anyone would want a barrel shorter than 24', to each is own I suppose but never appealed to me. The only exception I've found is in a newly acquired/build 308, I went with 20" as it was the only pre-fit available from Proof and I'm adding 6" of suppressor.

I think a 20 is ok in a 270, I thought Remington made the 760 or 7600 pump with 18.5 inch barrels at one time.

A little 16-18" carbine is slick to carry in the field.

I’ve got a 20” 270 in a 760 I had cut. Still does 2850 with 150 PTs. Works like a champ for what I use it for.

The more time that goes by and the more I shoot/hunt the shorter and shorter barrels get. Not trying to be a copy cat but it also looks like it’s a common trend among many here that hunt/shoot much more and have a lot more experience than I do.

There is an old Rem 700 ADL 270 with a 20" barrel in my family. It has been a long time since I've fired it, but I do recall it having a bit more bark than the similar length 308 that Dad and I used to shoot in those days. 60 grains of H4831 will have more muzzle pressure than 46 grains of IMR 4064. My Dads best friend hunted all over with one of the Ruger ULs in 270 with a Redfield Five Star 3x9 on top…. Wished I had that rifle today. Took moose and all kinds of stuff with it. To them hacks that don’t know ballistics or stuff, they just worked. It did bark.. no doubt there.

It's not about velocity, I don't pay much attention to that but I do believe that most cartridges have "ideal" barrel lengths for max performance and complete powder burn. A 24" 257 Wby mag and a 24" 30-06 are not comparable, the 30-06 has a gas expansion chamber 20% larger than the 257. For me, I'm tall with long arms and short rifles do not have any appeal to me. As much as a stubby 308 works well in short barrels, I still prefer 24" for all of my rifles, velocity gain/loss not considered.

Same here 257 bob, most of the time I walk straight by rifles with short barrels. Not much of my hearing left anyway but short barrels just add to your hearing loss....mb

My BAR MK2 270 Win has a 20.5” barrel. It’s obnoxiously accurate.
