Most of my old revolvers with fixed sights were OK... many tended to shoot low for me, so the front sights had to be filed down, but not generally very much (some of them... much).

New made pistols, on the other hand, all have HORRIBLY low shooting sights. I mean like 7", 8", 10" too low at like 15 yards. Ridiculously low. Front sights are too tall, rear sights are too short. Older versions of these same guns (if any) did not have sights like this. I have a theory why this is, but I probably couldn't prove it.

I prefer fixed sights on my handguns and I can't abide one that won't zero at 50 yards. I'll file, drift, turn barrels or dovetail in front sights etc. to accomplish that.

My model 36 and model 10 both shoot where I aim. My model 39-2 sights are adjustable for windage only, but it shoots low. Enough so to be annoying.

Like others, I find that the older fixed sight guns shoot to POA as long as loads appropriate to their design and original purpose are used. About 10 years ago I bought a Bearcat and with much anger discovered it shot low and right by about 6 inches in both directions at 25 yards. Ruger stated it was within spec. I liked the gun otherwise, and it was accurate so I sent it off to David Clements for conversion to adjustable sights. It's been a favorite ever since.

What's your theory?

I've shied away from SAA and Vaqueros just because of fixed sights.

I have a S&W 649 38 special, with fixed top strap rear sight ( snubnose, 1 7/8" bbl) It. shoots about 1 inch to the left at 10 yards with my reload of a 148 grain home hardcast DEWC over 3.5 grains of Bullseye. Elevation is good.

I have been meaning to use a dressed rectangular file to the rear groove strap on the right side which will move POI to the right, and open up the rear notch for better visibility. The thin side of the file will be dressed, so it will not make the rear groove deeper.

File a little. Shoot a little to see the results. Wash, rinse, repeat, until dead on at 10 yards.
