I can't think of anything more dependable than a Leupold topped Wyoming arms AR. Did that dude open up a shop in the Ukraine? Been kinda quiet.

I wouldn't feel helpless with an M1 Carbine for HOME defense.

Anyone not recognizing this, has never shot one or been shot at with a Garand. All the commies running around shooting AK’s would learn soon enough how much they are outgunned by the Garand when they get shot at ranges their AK’s can’t handle. Aimed shots with a semi auto will always trump spry and pray with a full auto… Precise shooting is great, but not always plausible. Sometimes you’re shooting where you think they are. Or maybe they are behind cover while your team moves and you hold them down. The Garand is a beautiful weapon! But she’s runs out too damn fast. 8 rounds doesn’t last long and the ammo is bulky and heavy. You can outfit an AR to shoot accurately to distances just as far as any Garand, if not further with modern optics that you can’t put on a Garand. And you can get an AR chambered in cartridges that will retain velocity and energy much farther than a 5.56. 6.5 Grendel or 6ARC come to mind. More rounds is always a plus, but shooting to miss or scare someone is what creates the waste of fire that seems to be the common practice today. Besides that, a 150 grain bullet traveling in the direction of the subject, is more likely to penetrate more to get to the intended victim. This was discussed as a semi auto rifle and you have turned it into an armed conflict which is indicative of a full auto rifle for collateral damage. I am still a fan of the Garand, but I will admit an AR 15 without a rail and a chainsaw on it, becomes a more practical defense gun if you want the most rounds per pound… Hi, Shrap. No, I never said anything about full auto. I do think the point of the OP is to survive an armed conflict, even if that is just you and a bad guy in your house. If we take an M16 or M4 with the 3 round burst, what does that really get us? Not much, IMO. With a little practice an AR can be manipulated to fire very rapidly. As you stated, it is the rounds that hit that matter. That said, your line of thinking on ammo conservation is in line with US military standard rifleman doctrine for a long time until we got the 1903, 1917 and then Garand and M1 carbine. Remember, when George Patton proclaimed the Garand to be the best battle implement ever devised, it WAS the high capacity, rapid fire standard issue rifle of its time! I’ll say this much, if someone comes into my house uninvited, I won’t be worrying much about drywall or ammo conservation. If I know where the bastard is, and if my family isn’t in the way, I’m cutting her loose.

Y’all lemme know when you got this figured out. You know I’m countin’ on ya! If I'm reading the room right the consensus is a 10/22, but I'll double check.

Ruger Mini 14 for dependability and capacity. Sublime accuracy potential at no extra cost. Defensive tool, not a bench gun. 1.5-3" groups will work. Have seen a newer one made in the last 20 years, shoot under 1". Bud messed around and had it turned into a heavy barrel 204. Been around quite a few, digest about anything you stick in em, just like a Garand or M-14 in a smaller package

I know, not mini 14

I'd be happy with an AR-10 or a M-14.

I have a stainless Mini-14 that has never jammed. That's what I keep next to the bed now. KYHillChick keeps hers close by as well. I pity the fool that tries to mess with that hillbilly girl in the dark.
I keep a rat bag Albanian SKS at deer camp that has never jammed either. I picked that one up for $49. It looks like it got dragged behind a truck. My bedroom window is about 10 yard from the county road. I have about 10 seconds to decide if the headlights are a coonhunter looking for his dogs or a home invasion.

Most dependable non-military style rifle (M1, M16/AR15, AK47) - I would have to go with a Browning BAR (not the old military version, either).
