I am with Dan on casting and reloading for everything i shoot.
Never bought a lot of brass i found it at the pits.
Now after getting a gift of about 16 cans of black powder and a few cans of 777 loose and some other sizes of Pyrodex i am playing with some blackpowder in the 38-55 and the 45-70.

Did where you finding lead? It’s dried up. I’ve had good luck hitting up the smaller independent recycling yards. They’re about as good as your going to get now that most new wheel weighs are zinc these days

Become a Fudd, they only need box of hunting rifle ammo every 2 to 3 years, problem solved. I can see how high food prices are of concern. Another way to save costs is to buy rifles in commonly used calibers. For OP that would be .270 Winchester instead of .280 Remington or 7x57.

War on lead by the left has been going on for 50 plus years. They wail and wring their hands over it's supposed toxicity. I t's never been about that, it is about reducing the affordability of ammo and limiting the supply of it. Get rid of lead , stop shooting, eliminate private ownership of firearms are the goals of the left and anytime you vote demo you sign on to the left....mb

I'm thinking about buying 1/2" AR500. My middle son is a good welder. Already talked to him about building some traps.

Did where you finding lead? It’s dried up. Y’all might try shooting ranges, dig into the berms a few inches. Make a screen box and sift the dirt out.

Yup for practice I try to only shoot into a recoverable backstop. Helps prevent lead loss, but wingshooting and lr target shooting that is impossible to do...mb

Try to be reasonable with people and just plain help keeping people in shooting sports . Sold a 783 in 300 Winchester with Diamondback scope a few weeks ago and let probably 8-9 boxes of ammo go with it for what Rifle and scope were worth . It was a good shooter , just no need for it around here . Sold couple bricks of UM1 , 8-9 bricks of Eley EPS , 5 bricks of Eley Biathlon, and couple bricks of Eley Club . Let the Eley Club go for 75.00 and the other Eley and UM1 go for a 100 a brick . Browning BPS 10ga Buck Kicker full choke with 60 rds of 00 and half a dozen boxes of steel shot for 450 . Letting stuff go I seldom shoot anymore with out gouging . Kenneth

I get email with ammo on sale pretty much daily, and not just 9mm and .223. Sign up at as many places as you can, including manufacturer sites. It works, but time is getting tight if you’re in need.
What fresh Hell is this?

Thankfully, due to the kind mentorship of Dan above, I too have the ability to roll my own including pouring that beautiful molten liquid into a mould and having shiny wide nosed projectiles at the ready for loading! LOL
Thank you Dan!

To quote Digital: There is reason I load my own, and I stocked up when Obamy was in office. When the big O made a pre-election statement about middle America holding on to their churches and guns, I stocked up before he was elected. Still shooting $17 a brick 22LR's. I have a lot of Federal bricks in the locker marked $8.95. At my age and factoring in my reduced mobility and desire to get out hunting, I won't ever have have to buy ammo again. I loaded another 100 rounds of .44 Mag yesterday for my Marlin lever 1894. I use the 270 grain Speer GDSP bullet and H110 powder. Last week I loaded 100 .45 Colt with the Speer 260 grain JSP and 2400 Powder for my Rossi Puma lever rifle. The price of ammo probably is never going to really come down.

The only factory ammo I buy is RF and deer slugs, all the rest I reload. Cast bullets I buy 1K at a time and sell 500 for enough so that the remaining 500 cost me nothing. I bartered for primers never paying scalper prices of $150/K or more, even took primers as partial payment for a rifle I sold. If you're resourceful enough there are ways to keep reloading costs reasonable. I've been a big game hunter for more than 50 yrs., never took any animal with a factory loaded round of ammunition. Same way with handguns, I go to the range every couple of weeks most of the time I shoot a couple hundred rounds of 9mm & .44 Magnum all handloads.

By the time you die of old age, you should have 2,000 pounds of reloading components.

Deals can be had, you just can't be in a hurry. Trying to obtain at the beginning of hunting season is like trying to find a generator after a hurricane has passed your area. Law of supply and demand.

Years ago I asked my dad what rifle he would recommend if everything went south. He recommended a 22LR. He said you can get ammo almost anywhere and a pocketfull of 22LR is a lot of shells. When my boys asked what I wanted for my birthday I always asked for 22 shells. I have had a lot of birthdays and now have lots of 22 shells. Enough to share with my boys if they need them. For everything else I have the ability to reload and cast bullets. I prefer jacketed bullets for most rifle cartridges but I have molds for 30 caliber and larger. Also have lots of lead. Need to find something to mix with the pure lead.

On the plus side, I am seeing more ammo on the shelves in our local stores.

... if everything went south. What did you mean by that?
