Hey guys,
Being a newbie to this forum and 99's in general I am trying to find out as
much as I can about them. I have only seen two Model
99's in .243, one in person and one on the Internet. Both have had a light(golden) finish on the wood and the stock around the receiver is shaped differently. Is this because the rifles I saw were a later production and changes were made on the entire line? Or, are these differences particular to
the .243? Sorry, I didn't get any serial#'s. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi 250, welcome to the board. There are many here with more expertise than me, but for your info the rifle in the picture is a 99E and is described as so in the ad. This is an "economy" version of the 99 introduced in 1960. From the impressed checkering pattern this one was likely made in the mid 1960' (Guess). It does not have a cartridge counter window in left side, has the lever safety and the stocks are birch not walnut. The price, even given the condition, seems to be on the high side--typical auction. The 243's seem to be rarer than the .308 or .300 in the E's so may be worth some premium. Here in western Canada I would expect to pay about $375-400 CDN (say $275-300 US) for a piece in this condition.

of birch you say? I guess the other one I saw in person was also an E? Were
all E models so equipped? What other calibers were available in an E? Was
.243 a rare caliber in a 99?(I really need to get Murray's book!)

Last night I saw a 99A in .308 SER#104XXXX, aluminum rotor and shell counter, straight stock, schnabel forend, no checkering, tange safety. The
finish on the wood appeared to be very light. Could it have been made of birch?

The 99-A was produced from `71-`82. The serial should be on the left side of the receiver, start with an alpha and followed by 7 numvers. The wood from the factory should be walnut. I think that only the 99-E's made 1961 and later had the white wood (birch) stocks.

Thanks, you are correct. The serial#104xxxx was from the .243 99E. Sorry, my mistake.
