You would be pleasantly surprised. Rural New England is beautiful. And a darn sight more rural than you would think. Away from the cities the people are even pretty decent.
Having traveled around in all the lower 48, I'd guess only RI and DE never positively impressed me much.
I've driven to RI to fish and DE to vacation and fish. They must not be too bad!
