I remember, when I was young, my grandparents raising their own food, beef, chickens, a garden with lots of vegetables and such. Not much went to waist with them. I spent the night with them when I was small, next morning they were fixing scrambled eggs and brains. I passed on that meal. I might have eaten something a little different and didn't know it a few times staying with them.
They did a lot of canning foods and freeze some things. My grandfather didn't care for freezing foods, he would rather can it. Didn't need to worry about the power going out.
