Know where there's a 74 El Camino 454 all original and in great shape I can get for 6000.

I remember an article either in “Car And Driver” or “Road And Track” that they wrote about the 1976 Trans Am. They talked about the styling of the car, the comfort in the driver’s seat and how you were in the cockpit of a thoroughbred race car.
Then when you engaged the clutch, it turned into a station wagon and did 0-60 in an afternoon.
It really was disappointing how Detroit detuned all the muscle cars after 1970…
yep........this ole '70 would chirp the tires going into drive
Personal experience here. Had one just like that only silver. Open the rear of the scoop up so it can get air in. Bump the timing as much as possible. True dual exhaust. Those changes will surprise you a lot. I had mine in 1977 so there were lots of Camaros- mustangs and a few dusters and Challengers still running around. The TA beat all of them. Edk
I'm coaching a guy through the finishing tuning of the car that showed Trans-Am's what road racing was all about, a restored AMX with the AMC 390 engine. It's always more fun spending the other guy's money when hotrodding!
That AMC 390 was a beast of a motor. Very underrated engine in it's day. My dad had a Javelin and Ambassador wagon with 390's.
I am currently working on a '63 1/2 Galaxie 500 XL. It is an original 390 4 sp white with black vinyl top. It has power steering and air, but not power brakes. That will be resolved. I am replacing the frame with a much more modern frame, disc brakes, far better front suspension, but I am keeping the 9" rear end rather than independent rear suspension.
I have already built the engine. It is a 445" Prison Break with a single 4bbl and I have tri-y headers. The dash is old school look, but modernized with digital/analog gauges. I need to do a pic thread on progress, but will start it next year after I get the replacement frame.
Was your Camaro a V-8 LS-1? I had a 99 Trans Am WS-6 6 speed that was extremely powerful and loads of fun! Years ago I had a 79 Trans Am, and although there was no comparison performance wise between the two, the cool factor of the Smokey and the Bandit car was off the charts. A couple things that will really wake up that smog restricted engine would be an Edelbrock dual plane intake and carb. Headers with a true dual exhaust system will open up the exhaust end. 4.10 gears will launch you like a rocket, but your gas mileage will greatly suffer. Be careful selecting your rear gear ratio. I’m envious, you have a really nice ride there!
hate to think of cars like that, and people in places like NY State owning them and driving them in the winter...
rusted to hell and back within 5 years and then finish rotting away in the junk yard...
When I've lived in northern state salt country, I just had cars that were blasé and no one cared about them rusting out..
I drove a VW or Volvo, when I was really wishing I had an SS Chevelle... from like 65 to 72 Model....

yeah a 1970 440 6 Pack Cuda was road driving heaven....I use to cry having to go to the bone yard in the late 70s, early 80s and see all the rusted out mid 60s to early 70s muscle cars all rusted out.

I was made in 1975 and missed all the original muscle car days. I'm thinking about how I will make it through my mid-life crisis. I might "need" a Hellcat Charger or TRX Ram.

No pity from me. This is a golden age of muscle cars too.

Yep. Cars are so much quicker now. Oh, and corners? We can actually go around them….
My brother bought a 1976 TA new with the 455 HO motor, then put a tarantula hi rise intake manifold on it with headers and challenged me to a race with my 1965 Pontiac. I had 308 gears in the rear end, so we went out on the interstate and raced from a 25mph rolling start. He went out of sight so fast, I thought his car stalled. I got a good look at him in my rear view mirror...
I had a 76 Trams Am in 1979-85. It was a 50th aniv. car for Pontiac. It was a 455, 4 speed 3:23 rear and had t-tops. Only 110 were made in that configuration. Ditched the cat and had a guy mod the carb and opened up the shaker scoop. The carb mods did wonders. The car was set up so lean and he fixed it where it opened the secondaries quicker. Advanced the timing all I could. It was like it was a different car just with tuning and ditching smog stuff.
