I have a 1941 Model 71 Deluxe with the peep on the bolt. The front sight is a replacement, being a fine bead and much taller. I would like to know the correct heighth that would center the bead in the hood. If one can even be found... Thanks

.31" height Lyman 31W, but Midwest gunworks has one for a Browning 71 that may work. It has a gold bead like the originals.
I try to stick with the basics, they do so well. Nothing fancy mind you, just plain jane will get it done with style. You want to see an animal drop right now? Shoot him in the ear hole. BSA MAGA

Thanks. Am I correct in assuming that measurement is from the top of the bead to the base where it sits on the top of the front sight base?

Mine shot way high with the front bead that was on it, so I replaced it with a Marble Arms #34MR, their item #503421, .343" H with 1/16" gold bead (and I think they had an ivory option, too).
Literature says the original should have been a Lyman 31W (.310" high with 5/64" gold bead), but the one that came to me was .260" high with a 5/64" gold bead... so maybe had been a replacement made sometime along the way.
Don't have a hood.

Since it has the peep on the bolt I am looking to use the hood as an extra ring in the sight picture so trying to make sure the bead is centered in the hood

A shorter front sight will move your POIs higher. -Chris

POI is good but the sight on it is too tall. Can't use the hood and rear sight setting is 300 tard graduation mark. If I lower the front sight I can lower the rea and use the hood. Well that's my goal

Well that's my goal Now to address what front hood you are trying to use.. Did some idiot try using a model 94 hood on it? Those are shorter than the model 70 hood, which the model 71 also takes. There is a guy on ebay, gunsinternational and gunbroker that is selling "original pattern" front hoods for $25.00. Better get one while it's hot, at that price..

You’ll want this style: I’m guessing you may have this style mistakenly/incorrectly added to your rifle at some point in time:

It has the correct hood... Okay, you should be good to go with the correct replacement front sight.

You’ll want this style: I’m guessing you may have this style mistakenly/incorrectly added to your rifle at some point in time: If the repro hood you are showing is for a model 70, it will also work. It is the same height. So for all intents and purposes, your picture is a moot point. If it has a shorter model 94 hood, that may be where the problem is.
