This is the 3d year in a row I've scored in this late season hunt.

[Linked Image from i.imgur.com]

This little guy hung around for a while. Shortly after this he disappeared in the direct where we saw more elk. He'll be fine.

[Linked Image from i.imgur.com]

The rocks you see are every bit as bad on the road. We got my RZR within 300 yds. It took us 1.5 hours to go less than 2 miles. Good thing I have a good skid plate and heavy duty tires on it. Walking out there was miserable.

Range 440, my longest shot ever. The range was kind of funny. My son-in-law was along for the ride...and hopefully to be a pack mule. He also has a real good 1500yd range finder. We'd spotted her from the road, nearly 600 yds. We waited until she wandered out of sight and started getting closer. We came up over a rock pile and she was in front of us. The range looked good so I got set and said:
how far?
340.
I can do that. BANG. That's almost my longest shot ever which was 350
I didn't say 340. I said 440. (deef old fart)
Oh well. She fell down.

My UTV is a little RZR 800 2 seater. With the elk, I was seriously overloaded with 2 of us and was bottoming out on the rocks. My SIL volunteered to walk while I took the meat to the truck and then come back for him. The rocks on the road were so bad that for the next 1.5 miles, he was literally walking right behind me. That's all the faster I could go without tearing the machine apart. It was 7 miles to the truck. Luckily, the really bad rocks were only for the 1st 2 miles. It had taken us 1.5 hours to drive that 2 miles on the way out.

Are those lava rocks? I hunted country like that in western NM when I lived there. Nasty stuff.

She's young. Her ivories were big and not worn a bit. There's a good chance that this was her 1st calf.

I found out something. Usually to remove ivories, I'd put my knife blade against them and tap it with a rock. They'd pop right out. I recently bought a replaceable blade knife with the razor sharp blades. I tried that on the ivories and it cut through them like soft butter. It just sliced them right off.

This cow season runs to Nov 30. It's a wintering area but the herds haven't appeared yet. When they do, there'll be elk all over the place. We saw a few but they could be locals that don't migrate out in the spring. Last year it was so warm that they didn't migrate until mid-December. We got into a small local herd that year, too, and got 2 cows. It's been a lot colder this year, about 20 when I got this one. Last year we got them on Nov 30 while wearing shirt sleeves.

I have a 'high dollar' Leupold VX-1 ( no longer made) that I've had for many years. Sighted in at 200 yds. It has 2 dots below the x-hairs. With this gun, the top one is on at 300, the bottom at about 380. I apparently jerked it slightly and would have hit a bit high if the range hadn't been farther than I thought.

Basalt is a dark-colored, fine-grained, igneous rock composed mainly of plagioclase and pyroxene minerals. It most commonly forms as an extrusive rock, such as a lava flow, but can also form in small intrusive bodies, such as an igneous dike or a thin sill

Is that both legal and moral? crazy

There are many square miles of rocks out there that look like this photo. I know they're volcanic but that's all. In many places they're piled high.

So far she's made some fine salami, tenderloins, and BBQ'd steaks. She's more than adequate.
