Looking for a hot carry load in Grizzly country. I like 240/250 grain hard cast lead gas checked bullets & all the speed I can get. My particular 657 have the 3” tube.

Try the 410429 Lyman Keith bullet over 19-20 gr. of H110 in StarLine brass. I use a magnum primer. My gun is a four inch 57-1.
If we live long enough, we all have regrets. But the ones that nag at us the most are the ones in which we know we had a choice.

I use and like for that purpose the Cast Performance 265 gr WFNGC, magnum primer, max load of 296 (or H110, same stuff) in my 4” Model 57. It is also very accurate. Heavy crimp of course. It clocks at 1150 fps.

I am looking at six 100 round boxes of 41 mag ammo. One box is 165s over a light charge of Universal and another is similar, but with Titegroup and they are not germane to this discussion. But they shoot nicely from the Total Titanium Taurus Tracker.
Then we have my cast 250s from an Accurate mold over 20 gr H110. I hate to abuse my 657 mountain gun with this load and generally use it only in the SBH bisley hunter. But if thinking about self defense in grizzly country, I might make an exception.
More appropriate for use in the N frame is the 210 XTP over 21 gr of H110.
There is also a box of 210 XTP over 12 gr Blue Dot a box of 210 gr Accurate cast over 10 gr Longshot.
I am sure any of these latter three would be lethal on deer or predators of most persuasions. For elk or grizzly, I would stick with that 250 gr load, and since I have the Ruger, I would carry it.
People who choose to brew up their own storms bitch loudest about the rain.

The heavy flat nosed hard casts are easy choices. Be sure to use a magnum primer, and don’t reduce the loads with 296/H110.
