But then again I can't figure out why a conference would setup their schedule to have two teams meet up for a second time in the conference championship unless the first meeting was a tie. If they're the best two teams in the conference, they should absolutely play in the conference championship. What else would you prefer to see?

Well presumably if there is a championship game in a conference there would be multiple divisions in the conference. Whether it's east/west or north/south. Have teams play within their division, the division winner plays for the championship. Or decide the conference champion during regular season conference play. But since it's all only about money, do whatever makes the most cash.

Those are solid options, but I would oppose doing away with a conference championship game in your second scenario. I always hated ND having one less chance to lose a conference championship game than other teams, just because they were independent (and mostly because I hate seeing ND propped up every single season).
