It's just one method among many to find a good load for a rifle. Personally, the way I learned to develop a load is sort of this method. Find a powder and bullet combo I want to shoot well, start at a mid-range load, load up five shot groups, increasing at 0.5 gr. increments up to the max load, and then go to the bench and find which one shoots best at 100 yards. If a couple shoot well, stretch it to 200 yards and use the one that shoots best. Bullets loaded at the longest functional length for the magazine box. Is it benchrest method? No. But it's killed a lot of critters over the years.
