does suck when you're on an international flight to Asia from Chicago and the plane has to land in Alaska due to a medical emergency on board and is too heavy to take off on the runway landed

Was on a flight once, just gaining altitude after take off. Piolet came on coms and said "If you see something coming out of tanks, no need to be concerned. We are off loading fuel while we turn back for an emergency landing". No reported injuries, everyone walked away....Joe

Even in an emergency fuel jettison can only take place at 2,000 feet or higher, that gives it time to evaporate and not soak things on the ground.
Pershing 1A. No city too big, no populated area too small. We even get the roaches.

More common among military craft than commercial.

Never had the capability to dump fuel in the B52. In order to reduce weight to get down to a safe landing weight we would fly for a few hours in a high fuel burning configuration, gear down, etc.

I think it’s 6000’, at least that’s what it was when I was still flying.
However, if I had a problem on takeoff where I need to land right now, it was “sorry folks, look out below!”. Gotta do what you gotta do! 😊
In the Phantom we could put the speedbrakes out, put one engine in afterburner and turn the dumps on and get down to max trap weight pretty quickly. We normally launched with about 18,500 pounds but when carrying 4 missiles we had to get down to 3000-3500 pounds of fuel depending on the individual aircraft.
I don’t remember exactly what our emergency was but we had a problem right after the cat launch one day off the Midway and I got rid of about 15,000 pounds of gas and landed in less than 7 minutes. I logged 0.1 hours of flight time on that one.
In the Tomcat dumping fuel in afterburner was prohibited because the dump pipe was right between the engines and the burner plume would light off the fuel. There was an interlock that prevented the fuel dump from actually occurring if the weight was on the wheels.
However……..I saw it happen one day while refueling in the fuel pits that are located about halfway down the long runway at NAS Oceana. A sister squadron aircraft was taking off and I was watching over my right shoulder. As soon as they lifted off a huge plume of flame erupted from their tail. My first thought was, “we’re gonna die!” thinking they were having a catastrophic engine failure. Since we were hooked up to fuel hose we were trapped. After a couple of seconds, I realized what had happened and quickly switched to Guard frequency and yelled, “turn off the dumps!” and a few seconds later the flames went out.
The pilot, a new guy, had missed that the dump switch was “on” when he did his pre-start checklist so as soon as they got airborne with no weight on the wheels, the dump did its thing. He got a new call sign that day….Torch 🔥
