I have a large number of Remington 405gr JSP bullets sitting here and I'd like to load them up in my Lott. I don't want to beat the snot out of myself, and would like a mild "45-70 trapdoor level" load (1200-1600fps) for some fun target shooting and maybe close range hunting. The 350gr TSX loads I have for hunting are highly effective on game, but they are no longer fun to shoot. I've checked all my loading manuals and none of them have/show reduced loads. Anyone have any safe "reduced" recipes they could share here or by PM? I know the general rule with Trail Boss and cast bullets, but these are jacketed, so if I could use trail boss to fill all the space in the case, I'm not sure what the dangers or velocities would be with these jacketed bullets.

Much Appreciated,

Stump

Seat that Remmie 405gr on the first cannelure and your COL in the Lott will be about 3.35".

Use 33 grains of AA-5744 and velocity will be about 1450 fps (24" barrel) and pressures less than 15,000 psi.

Use 53 grains of H4895 for just about 64% net fill and it is over 60% of a usual max load of 87 grains with the Woodleigh 400-gr PPSN in the .458 Lott.
Velocity will be just under 1600 fps (24" barrel) and pressure less than 17,000 psi.

Western Powders, Inc. says not to use filler with AA-5744,
many people do so in the big bores.

Hodgdon says H4895 is safe down to 60% of max load with a particular bullet, and no filler is required.
You won't go wrong with the above for H4895 and no filler.
If you use a filler it will be more accurate and a little faster MV.
I would use F-215, CCI-250, or WLRM primers.

I have no experience with Trail Boss, but I suspect you will be hard pressed to get 1200 fps with that load as you describe.
I would try it and see.

If I remember correctly I found loads like you’re looking for on Steve’s reloading pages years ago for that bullet. I can’t remember what powder I used but the loads were very mild in recoil but my RSM is a very heavy gun.

Thank You Gentlemen, I have H4895 on hand, so I'll give that a try. I'll also try and find Steve's loads.

If you have Trail Boss, you can engineer a case filling load that won't cause a bunch of pressure problems.
