This is very common among combat vets and it is not unheard of for the children having to deal with these unknown keepsakes.

Combat vets are often proud of them but at the same time don’t want their loved ones to see their dark side. They end up being dark secrets that they know few can relate to.

If his kids loved him they’d shut the [bleep] up about it and handle it themselves.

If they really were your friends, you’ll do same.

My Grandfather on my dad's side was a WWII vet and when he died, I ended up living at his house taking care of the place. Me and my college buddy found a cigar box and inside it was a smaller box that contained a bunch of gold teeth. They definitely were not removed by a dentist. More like a rifle butt. I was in my early-mid 20s at the time and an Infantry vet myself, so I understood. My grandpa absolutely hated Japanese people until the day he died.

The teeth thing made sense though when talking to my dad and knowing my grandfather. My grandfather went through the depression. They never threw anything away, and he saved everything. He had stacks of egg cartons, folded up aluminum foil, coffee cans full of screws, nuts, bolts, etc. Tons of old car radios and parts. I have no doubt that he was saving the gold teeth like he saved everything else.

I worked with a guy who was a Marine Vietnam combat vet.

He told me he had a whole sock full of gold teeth that someone stole from his foot locker just before taking the freedom bird home.

Friend of mine worked for a pawn shop for years, there was an old trunk in the back that the owners uncle brought back from WW2 and eventually told my buddy he could have it. The uncle was stationed somewhere around the Himalayan mountains where a lot of the stuff in truck came from. Head hunter axes with dried blood, human jawbones on necklaces, crazy stuff. Kept it in his game room.
