As much as I like my great shooting 7mags,I find myself using the 30-06 more and more these days.Just something about the 30cal wound channel and it's ability with heavier bullet weights.
~Molɔ̀ːn Labé Skýla~ As Bob Hagel would say"You should not use a rifle that will kill an animal when everything goes right; you should use one that will do the job when everything goes wrong."Good words of wisdom...............
I had a acquaintance who was talking guns while I filled up his Farm Diesel tank back in the 80's and made the comment that, "I don't know why people complain about the 7 Mag kicking because mine kicks less than my '06!" So knowing that he, and the 3 fingered neighbor who taught him how..., reloaded his ammo, asked him what the loads were behind that comment. Short version is that he was loading 150's to about 200 fps less in the 7 mag than the '06. The rifles were probably a pound apart on weight as well and for a brief moment I was tempted to enlighten him why that was happening but wisely left him in his happy place of ignorance. F01
I remember my first elk hunt, excited is the perfect word!
Good luck to him and that load will work on a bull elk.
Now, I bet you don't think an F-250 is wabbit overkill....
But it's bigger and heavier than a .460 Wby...
So, maybe...?

Of all the ancient posts to resurrect, picking one that questions the 06's effectiveness?
Df, you must be really bored this week....
Guilty as charged.
I like 458Win’s byline about the ‘06. Something to the effect, those complaining about the ‘06 are confessing their lack of marksmanship. (Rough paraphrase, but same idea)
Young bull. 30/06, 165 Barnes TSX BT. H4350; 2850 fps. 400 yds. Also used a 340 Wby for two decades — loved it — 10 for 10 with it. My last bull was with a 284 Win. 140 gr TTSX. They all did well, but you have to hit them right to begin with and use a good bullet. The ‘06 is fine. I’d use my 284 if I go again.

What were his expectations? I mean they must have been unrealistically high to be flatly unimpressed.
No kidding. I was a late comer to the 06. I can’t hardly stand to not kick the tires on new stuff but the old 06 with the new Hornady 212 with new SB6.5 was mighty impressive to me.
It was hard for me to admit how darned effective it was.

I’m 45, so old age must be setting in
I’ve not tried that combo but should!
I really appreciate the ‘06 and I’ve got one that is sighted & loaded with 180gr Horn IL as a ‘just in case’ rifle. It’s always sighted & the load never changes. (just in case is if I’ve been too lazy to have worked up a load for a specific hunt lol)
I’ve got 5 years on ya and still hitting it hard - but as the old cliche says it’s not the years it’s the miles…😜
Quote by a friend once that has hunted elk frequently. His go to rifle is a 7 mag. He's not a long range guy, so he's not shooting the 7 mag for 700 yard shots. Not sure what his hunting partner was using in 30-06 that didn't impress him, but got me to wondering what frequent elk hunters think about a 30-06 and what would "impress" you?
When I was a kid in Utah in the 1960s there were a lot of elk hunters and way more deer hunters. It was serious business, school was cancelled the Friday before season opened on Saturday. Every elk hunter I knew used a .30-06 without exception. Most deer hunters also. Except my father of course, he went and bought a .303 British for $15 or $20 dollars out of a barrel at the local military surplus seller...

30-06 is more than enough for any Elk....especially in the hands of a skilled shooter
My last Utah LE bull was taken with a 308 & 180 gr Swift bullets
