I remember them well also. The house where I grew up was a couple of blocks from the train tracks. The tracks ran through a section of pine woods. As kids we were always in the woods shooting BB/pellet guns and setting traps. When we heard the train coming we would put coins on the track. Couldn't wait for the caboose to go by so we could go look for our flattened out pennies nickels and dimes.
In all of my bornt days I have never lived over a mile from this line. Pard had a trailer house in a trailer court about 150 north of the rails. Some people wondered how we never even noticed it rolling by.

When Germany surrendered in 1918, the ceremony took place on "lounge" car. They called it a "train carriage". When Hitler defeated France, he insisted that the ceremony take place in the same rail car. A finger poke in France's eye.
I have a 1918 box car in the yard at the farm. If I can't find someone to take it, it's getting converted to scrap metal in 2 years. The wood is in bad shape but the steal without the wheels is still there.

Never mind. I guess that IS a picture below the "casting along the door".
We moved to the farm in 1962. It looked a lot better then. My dad died in 1978 so it was pretty much neglected after that and only used for storage. My brother covered the front of the car with sheet tin years ago. The metal is there but it needs the wood replaced for anyone who wants to take on a big project. Otherwise, it's scrap metal by 2025 when we build a new building.
