Ethics are personal.
I grew up in SD and have done most of my hunting in Wyoming. The idea of baiting deer with feed and shooting them over a salt block or pile of corn is crazy to me and seems unethical. That comes from the influence of the rules and what is considered fair chase in the areas I spent most of my time. By that same token, pheasant hunting the ditches and road hunting is legal in South Dakota so I also am very comfortable with road hunting. I probably drive more than I should for deer too. Most people would find that lazy and unethical based on the rules where they spend most of their time. I shot a lot of fork horn mulie bucks when I was a kid. Didnt like shooting does and was always around the fork horns. Feel bad about that now and prefer to watch them walk around. I would watch them 98 times out of a 100 and eat the tag before I shot another of them. Lots of rambling for no real reply other than each to their own and what is normal for the area. If you dont like it, dont do it and maybe you will set a trend. If you believe that then you are a relativist. We see it today in this country. For example, "my truth" is relativism. If ethics are personal then there can be no agreed upon no-nos of behavior. You sure ethics are personal?

The one who sits water and myself both fly fish, neither of us are the stereotypical fly fisher. I'm sure those boy's are a hoot to take fishing... Especially if they are fly fishermen.

The interpretations of hunting ethics is as broad anything else in psychology. Psychology?

Just me- I hunt and fish whatever legal way I want to and don't worry over the other guy. If you look in a freezer bag here, you can't tell how the donor met it's fate

This is me as well for the most part. The rub is when someone gets preachy about one form of hunting, but they probably are engaging in a form of hunting someone else finds not “sporting”. Ie; the guy who gets preachy (mostly in a fun way) about sitting water in a desert climate has no problem shooting an animal at 800 which many say is not very sporting. Before anyone gets their panties twisted, I’m not saying I’m anti LR. Just me- I hunt and fish whatever legal way I want to and don't worry over the other guy.

Aren't laws codified ethics? Yes and no, there's a regional and traditional component. If legal/illegal was the only test, it would either be legal or illegal to run deer with dogs or bait them with corn everywhere.

If legal/illegal was the only test, it would either be legal or illegal to run deer with dogs or bait them with corn everywhere. Sorta along the same lines. I've hunted east Texas, on our place, Hill Country and South Texas leases since I was a yonker. Since '99 its been 5 different ranches, from 3,000 to 60,000 low fence/no fence acres. On none of those was field dressing allowed. Have to bring the animal back whole, and after gralloching, the offal is disposed of at a designated "boneyard". For the most part these were operating cattle ranches. Whenever the ranchers see buzzards they go take a look see, unless its over the bone yard. One can imagine my consternation when on a hunt in Montana I see Grizzly feeding on a gut pile that we have to walk/ride by to get where we are going. Did not take me long to figure where there were Magpies, there was usually a gut pile nearby. Got a kick outta this: I was with the outfitter when he got a call. Seems that a grizz had got between one of the guides, his clients and the horses. He asked the outfitter, what do I do. The outfitter told him not to shoot the bear before he'd eaten both the clients. ya! GWB

It’s about on par with killing a buck in the peak of the rut trying to reproduce or a buck on the beach eating kelp trying to survive. Get them how you can.

From some of the stories I've heard, at some of the water holes in dry country things can get sporty, since a lot of different people want to hang game cams and hunt them.
Ethical or not, when you get ot the point that a lot of different people want to hunt the same small spot, you've got an issue.

Have a South African friend that has no problem hunting with a light at night but thinks only the lowest scum on the earth would hunt over a water hole. Ethics is what you do when no one is looking.
Some mornings, it just does not feel worth it to chew through the straps!~
