I've got a friend whose husband is in failing health and has offered to sell me an M1 Garand. It's an IHC with matching IHC Bolt from 1955. No visible cartouches. It's in very good condition with little muzzle wear. Bore looks good, but needs cleaned. No pitting. Sale includes original CMP receipt from the 1980s, M1 Garand Owners Guide and 4 box magazines. I want to insure I'm giving her fair value but I know little about M1 Garand values. What is a good value range?

The barrel manufacturer will have an impact on value, LMR from the 50’s would be correct.
I sold mine last year for $1500 and hopefully the values are up from that.

Yup, $1500 (+/-) depending on condition and how bad the buyer wants it.

Look for numbers stamped in the barrel channel of the stock forearm, and check the op rod manufacturer.

If the stock has 3-4 numbers about 1/4 inch tall stamped in the channel - it’s probably IHC as well.

If the oprod is IHC - it’s a solid $1400-1500 rifle.

If you go to the CMP Forum - there’s a “sticky” at the top of the Stores pages that lists what the CMP would charge, by rifle type, by manufacturer, and by their four grades of condition.

That’s the price they charge “IF, and now a bigger IF” they have any available on line or in the three stores. South store just reopened after a two year plus closure, and they had a decent selection by reports.

I picked up a 1955 SA from an estate sale this past November. CMP Service Grade from 1997. Never shot still had CMP tag on sling swivel. Matching barrel, rod, bolt, sights and gas chamber. New then CMP wood. Trigger group is from all over WWII but is all SA.
-1 muzzle +1throat. Shoots bolt action accurate. I paid $1200 and still feel a little guilty about it.

I have an M1 Garand by IIRC H&R. Stamp on the barrel says 1955. I'd check but it's buried at the back of a large safe. Anyway, the rifle looks unfired except for factory test firing for function.

Value of an IHC can vary greatly depending on the serial number. IHC had a few variations known to collectors as "Gap Letter", "Postage Stamp" and "Arrow Head" and there are some differences within those types, like who made the receiver. Some IHC receivers were made by Springfield Armory and HRA. With no markings on the stock, it's probably a replacement or sanded refinished from a previous rebuild, or it could still be an IHC stock that had the markings sanded off. There are ways to determine if it's an IHC stock. The amount of original parts left on it can effect value. IHC's are very much sought after by collectors as they have the lowest production numbers. Seeing as it has paperwork from the 80's, it should be DCM paperwork. CMP came later. DCM papered rifles vs later CMP papers can help with value to some collectors. Either way, a DCM or CMP papered IHC these days is probably worth at least 1200, possibly much higher if it's one of the rarer receiver variations with original parts and barrel.

Ask what they want for it. If they offer way below value, over pay him a bit to make it closer to retail value, but still a good deal.
