Gents,

I'm toying with the idea of buying/building a dedicated long range rig with target distance between 600 to 1200+, maybe out to 1750 on occasion.

I have a budget of 2k. I'd like to know what you would go with to include caliber. I would like to be able to use a magazine.

I'm interested in a 300wm for caliber.

This is not something I’m into so can’t help but I’m curious as to why the 300 wm when the 300 PRC exist and seems purpose built for such a thing?

Personally, I haven't looked much into 300 prc. I have dies and ammo put together for the 300wm already. I have a 300 rum and win mag for hunting rifles, and don't want to add another 300.

I've only shot to 1000 with my Savage/Xcaliber/Choate .260 that I put together for LR. If starting over, I'd likely go with an MDT chassis. That means Remington, Tikka, or Savage. If you're stuck on 300wm, I believe it means Remington as the others only come in SA. I'd consider SA 6.5's and 7's.

If buying rather than building, the Tikka TAC A1 and Savage Elite Precision are right around your price point.

Last Sunday we had a little get together at the North Range, 82 deg no wind, past 800 yards it looked like shooting thru a water fall, 2 Gunsmiths 5 hunting guides, Gunsmiths brought a 700 PRC and 300 PRC, we shot our rifles and test shot their PRC's both were shooting factory ammo 7mm 178 gr. 300 212 gr. I think?

I liked the 300 PRC over the 7PRC, I only shot each 5 times, maybe it was the rifles but the 300 just worked great for me, to 800 yards, the 7PRC shot great but the recoil was way more than the 300 PRC, they hit hard when they get there but my 6CM and 6.5 prc will and did shoot with them all day. I can't think of anything i need either one for, the rifles i have now cover 97% of what they can do. we are going to have a do over this coming Sunday, hoping for cooler weather and shoot out a little farther Rio7

For the 7 PRC to recoil way more than the 300 PRC I’m gonna assume the 300 was either drastically heavier or had muzzle break/ suppressor and the 7mm didn’t?

They both had Muzzle Brakes, and weighed about the same, the 300 pushed the 700 kicked. I don't have a dog in this fight and don't need or want either one. Rio7

I went with the Savage 110 Precision rifle in 300WM for my LR project. Still working up a load for it, and it's showing great potential. So far it's liking 4831 and heavy bullets.

Like Jordan mentioned, I'd be going 7 PRC. I have a couple of pretty accurate 300 WM's as well, but I prefer those heavier than I care to schlep around for hunting when shooting 212's and 220's. For me, the .284's offer the best balance between BC, bullet weight, recoil, rifle weight, etc. I don't do any sanctioned competition, and all of my rigs are for fun and/or hunting.

I'd probably do it in a Tikka, but maybe something 700 based depending on what I wanted to run for mags, bottom metal, and stock. I have a LH 7mm RM Tikka with 3.715 AICS mags that yields 3.6 COAL. It makes a great set up for sending heavies. When the barrel goes, it'll likely be replaced with a 7mm PRC.

I have a 6.5 PRC on a LH Tikka being assembled right now. I like short mag based calibers in the Tikkas; plenty of COAL, lots of mag options. I'll have to see how it does and how I like it. Haven't spent a lot of time with 6.5's.
