Jesus, what a beast. It cracks me up to think how much us gun nuts fret over having the perfect rifle set-up for whatever animal we're hunting, and this guy goes out with a cheap "Wal-Mart" Marlin with a Tasco in see-thru mounts and slays Goliath...

Nice bear. How big was it?

They go over 800 lbs in eastern NC. A 700 lb'er is not all that terribly uncommon in eastern NC. I've photographed bears in Dare County that went over 700 lbs. 500 lb'ers are actually fairly common.

Is the record 800lb in NC or was that PA?
Don't ask me about my military service or heroic acts...most of it is untrue.

If I remember correctly, was many years ago, an 800 lber in PA was also killed with a 30-30.

We have a few large ones in FL as well. Not much hunting pressure, lots of feed, and no hibernation creates large bears. We estimated this guy at >600# and saw him frequently with another, slightly smaller bear. I had a run in with the smaller bear during turkey season at 30 yards and thought he went 450#. keyboard checker

Are they just getting heavy and carrying a lot of weight or are they getting some good skull measurements too. I can’t imagine an 800lb bear not having a 20 plus inch skull.

Most of the big bears we take in SE VA/NE NC that are over 500 typically have good heads. You do see some odd stuff like small bears/big heads and big bears/little heads but typically when they get that big they are nice.

One of my bucket list things to do is go “down east” a little and go bear hunting over hounds in the southern Appalachian Mountains. I love running hounds up here but to go down into the hills where it all started would be great. That and a lion hunt over hounds.
