79S peaked my curiosity with tales of a classic stainless with a SN under 39k. It’s the earliest stainless I’ve seen. Of note, these first classic stainless guns were marked “classic sporter” which seems to have changed to the normal “classic stainless” sometime before G44xxx.

What’s the earliest you’ve seen?

Here’s mine 270 Winchester I currently own. Up until that one you are referring too mine was the lowest I seen far as stainless goes.

Well, I guess it depended on who was running the roll mark machine that particular day then!

Here is G39724, also an ‘06, marked classic sporter. Probably left the line the same week as yours.

I need to buy more of these. The one I have is 69xxx its's marked "CLASSIC STAINLESS". I'll keep a better eye out for these, seeing how it looks like they sold like hotcakes in the classifieds here.

Yep.. I had a LH M70 Classic Sporter stainless in .300WM. Bought it new in '92 or '93.. Only shot it about 50 times.. It was a rifle that I just couldn't get used to, even though I'm a LH shooter.. That, and the recoil on that specimen was totally uncomfortable.. Finally sold it on Gunbroker about fifteen years ago...

You had a stainless 5 digit LH model 70? Should’ve kept it only one in existence. All others that were made fell into 176000-177000 sn range

I’ve not seen any stainless featherweights lower than the 40K range. But who knows, there might be a handful out there.

Not my cup of tea either.. If yours was the walnut stocked version, they don't fit me well either. I hate the damn things.

They sure do command a premium though. As 79S said, most of those which I have seen have been in the G176-178xxx range.

I wonder if his neighbor in Georgia is going to buy it?? That would be a cool one to have.
