Figure if I need it, I'm gonna NEED it. And not being a Rambo Billy Bob Bad Ass, I'm gonna be excited and a bit skeered. Won't need any further complications.
Parents who say they have good kids..Usually don't!
Do you keep one in the chamber, for your home defense and car PDW that is without a safety?
If a handgun isn't hot and ready to go, then it's just a small club.

Cheap/easy to grab a kydex holster for a car gun or nightstand gun and they can often be adjusted to require minimal effort to "shuck" but serve to cover the trigger area completely for no accidental trigger pokes. 870 has a round in the chamber with the slide cracked open an inch. And while it is indeed best to treat all weapons as if they are loaded, I use the dust cover on a AR rifles to indicate to myself if they are hot. Closed cover means a round is in there.
Condition 3 saved two guys and me from a life changing event. Back in 2013 I had a home invasion and my 1911 was locked in a back bedroom drawer. Okay, it was not real accessible, but when I got to it and racked the slide, those two guys heard that and ran. The police dog tracked them and DNA convicted one of them. The judge told the kid that he was lucky that he hadn’t been shot because the police report stated that I was in the process of getting my handgun.

I'd venture to say that this event could have easily gone the other way with "Condition 3 in locked drawer in another room" hurting you a lot more than it helped. Fortuitous to all involved for that one instance, but probably not very effective on average.
My father ran into a similar situation once when he was a young man and came home through the back door of the house, which he didn't usually do. A burglar was in the front of the house and ran out the front door. My father was already armed when he saw the back door ajar. The guy was lucky he survived and Dad was lucky the guy hadn't armed himself while in the house. Cops caught the guy.

Luck makes for a piss poor partner. And you were simply lucky the "kid" realized someone was home and ran.
Every normal man must be tempted, at times, to spit on his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin slitting throats.
Condition zero is locked and loaded, safety off. Condition one is locked and loaded safety on. The only gun that is locked and loaded is the one I'm in immediate control of. If that's in my car, truck, house, camper, or on my belt, cool, but I'm in control of it. I'm not leaving a loaded gun to bounce around my truck tool box because I might need it in a flash, or my nightstand drawer while I'm at work.
