So, what non-cataloged cartridge was the unfired back door 700 MR chambered in? This is a pretty good thread. Rather than risking this thread getting derailed, I'll pass on adding anything else. -Al

Look at the first couple of years of non-magnum 700’s. While not labeled “Mountain Rifles”, they are light and in my opinion some of the best 700’s. Besides, buyers see that the finish isn’t the “DuPont’s bowling pin finish” and they think something must be wrong - a guy can buy these rifles at a very reasonable price, sometimes half the price of the mountain rifles.
I prefer classic. Semper Fi I used to run with the hare. Now I'm envious of the tortoise and I do my own stunts but rarely intentionally

Since Al isn't going to add anything else, we'll be in the dark unless another insider comes forward. Inquiring minds want to know.

What could possibly need to be kept secret about a Remington rifle made 30 years ago?

My favorite Remington mountain rifle was introduced in ‘86 also. Of zero significance; those early blued wood MR had a smooth bolt, but I’ve never seen a ks with one.

What could possibly need to be kept secret about a Remington rifle made 30 years ago? For some reason a particular Johnny Cash song comes to mind.

Those catalogs sure bring back memories. Couldn't wait to see what was new when they showed up in my dad's gun shop.

Well, you can always make a MR with the right stock. This one has a Shilen barrel in a McWoody MR handle, NF scope in Talley LW rings and Timney trigger. It's chambered in that infamous manbun round and shoots about like you think it would. DF

What could possibly need to be kept secret about a Remington rifle made 30 years ago? You mean like undocumented employee lunch pail guns?

I like the shape and feel of the MR stock. It's sleek and the pistol grip is really nice.
Whoever came up with that design knew his stuff.

DF Agreed, I like the McM MR for light contour barrels and the McM Hunter for standard and magnum contour barrels better than any of the other McM styles that I've tried.

when did they drop the floor plate model mountain rifles? I don't mind the detach my ex at all but I just curious I have a 308 and a 243 in the floor plate models and a 260 in detachable mag version. I bought the 260 in 2001 I believe. which I'm also remembering was probably the first year they were in existence. about the 308 and 243 a few years before that used. They were produced both ways for a while. The last iteration of mountain rifles before the bankruptcy had a floor plate and a B&C stock. I had one in my virtual cart chambered in .308 Winchester for a long time, but I just was weary of later Remington quality and I never checked out. I logged on one day almost a year after the bankruptcy to see they had finally sold out. Perhaps the new RemArms will be of higher quality. On the flip side, I did purchase a late 6.5 Creedmoor 700 Tactical AAC-SD and with rebate, it was so cheap I bought it just for the action with the intention of trueing it. It is timed properly and had a good looking barrel and chamber. I started firing it to see good potential, even with the Hogue stock. I threw it in an H-S stock I had and it came alive. Best $350 rifle I've bought.

None of the involved parties are likely still around. I once obtained a Cadillac in just such a fashion. Don’t ask me what year it is. 😁
