Thalidomide was developed by a German company and sold as safe for pregnant women. It turned out that they hadn't tested it on pregnant women. In fact, the pregnant wife of one of their own people tried it and had a baby with no ears months before it was released to the public. The coverup went on for years after it was pulled off the market. The human carnage was catastrophic and even until now they haven't openly admitted what they did or made restitution. The official FDA report showed 17 Thalidomide babies in the US. About half used samples handed out in the US and the rest said they ordered it from Europe. Some say there were a lot more than 17. A former manager of a local credit union here in Soldotna was one. Somehow, I suspect you are right on the numbers.

We had a Cute Girl in high school that had flippers for arms.
Great Girl with a Great Attitude and Personality.
Everyone liked her and treated her good as far as I knew.
