I’m setting up a tang safety M77 RSI in 250 Savage. My scope options are a VX3i 2.5-8 with the standard Leupold duplex or an older Vari-X III 1.75-8 E with a heavier duplex. This rifle will be used for New England woods whitetail hunting where there’s sometimes a call for a quick shot at close range and the cover is thick and it’s often dark, but there are also opportunities for shots out to 250–300 yards. I’m leaning towards the 1.75-6 because of the heavier duplex, and wider field of view, but the newer scope, supposedly, has better low light/glare performance. I’m wondering whether the newer brighter scope is going to be quicker for that sudden close shot or if the field of view and heavier duplex on the 1.75-6 outweighs the other factors. As for as the long end, it doesn’t make much difference to me other than the 8X is maybe a little easier to sight in at the range. Anyway, opinions or comments appreciated.

I don't think there's a whole lot of difference between the two. If it were me I would try them both. put some rounds down range and make your decision. You will probably like one a little better than the other for how you hunt. everyone's eyes are not the same. What someone else recommends doesn't necessarily mean it's gonna work best for you. Personally I like the standard duplex reticle better than the heavier duplex If I have an opportunity for a 300yd shot. But that's just me.

It's between these two scopes because I already own them and they work with the rings that came with the rifle. I'm on the fence about the heavy duplex, but if there ever was a place for one among the guns I hunt with it would be on this rifle.

I'd mount the 1.75-6 for the thicker reticle. I mounted a FX-2 3x Big Bore with a heavy duplex on my RSI.

We have the same rifle. I put the 2.5x8 VX3i with the standard duplex on mine. I really like it. Gland to share some pics and loads that have worked well for me. just PM, and Id be glad to share. Chris

As luck would have it, tonight the local deer herd decided to pay a visit to the hay field below my house. I got a chance to look at them at 6x through the 1.75-6/heavy duplex. They were probably just about 300 yards away. It's quite usable at that range, maybe not optimal, but I probably would work my way closer if I was actually hunting anyway.

You need to to use a Chicom scope with a Mofo reticle and jamb a 133 grain bullet into the lands.
Cause for virtual shooting, it's the virtual schitt.


But for practical purpose, experiment with both as you did, at various ranges and light levels, and see what works best for YOU.

I can see the advantages to both options is the problem.

Using my own experience of 60 years of Midwest deer hunting, I think that it comes down to how you hunt. When I tracked and tried still hunting, a good fitting 99 .300 Savage with a low mounted heavy Duplex 1.5-5x20 was ideal. As I morphed into a stationary sniper type, I wanted more magnification and a finer crosshair. You will never lose that heavy Duplex into first and last and later legal light, but first and last legal light deer sightings have been infrequent for me. I am remembering a few years back when I had a brief encounter with a buck in the brush and had about a 150 yard shot opportunity. Even at 5x I hesitated because it looked like that heavy Duplex covered too much of the deer. With my old 2.5-8x36 standard Duplex, I think that I would have taken that shot. Eyes like lots of things don’t get better with age and I’m liking better optics with more magnification. A .250 Savage is kind of a precision placement kind of cartridge, not what mosts guys would pick as a jump shooting chambering. I’d opt for the 2.5-8x36 with the standard Duplex given the choice between those two.

2.5-8 for sure. Plus the extra zoom in off season won’t hurt at the range.

Windfall, I often still hunt my way to a stand, so that's the issue, but I guess I just have to try them both. Guess I'll start with the 2.5-8 based on recommendations plus it's newer and probably optically superior. What you're saying re the 250 savage makes sense, too.

The heavy duplex is my favorite Leupold reticle, so the scope with that reticle is one that I would choose. Back when Leupold would change reticles for less than an arm and a leg, I sent several VX-II and VX-2 2-7x33s to them for that work.

I prefer the old Leupold 2-7x28s on my short action 77 RSIs for the aesthetics, rifle feng shui, but my 77 RSIs are mostly just wall decorations in the gun room.
