For a few years up in the high country I was voluntarily helping two very nice ranch youngsters improve their playing on violin and cello, and their excellent parents sometimes had the kids do some chores for us. Beautiful family working hard to make their limited place a successful cattle ranch. The mom also worked hard raising high quality goats - supplied some to 4H kids - and the family had two Great Pryrenees for the goats. Those who know that country know why - strong populations of coyotes, bobcats, wolves, mountain lions, bald eagles, feral dogs, etc.
Those two dogs were fabulous protectors - the mom never lost a goat to a predator. When wife and I would occasionally visit the ranch, those big dogs were welcoming to us and any family members we brought along. However, we never tried to get between them and the goats.
