I and my late wife have driven across it a dozen times or more when visiting San Francisco.
As for the suiciders, when I lived in Los Angeles, a girl whom I knew well who dated a good friend of mine but later broke up, drove to San Francisco, but parked her car away from the bridge. She walked to the bridge, walked to the railing, took off her clothes and jumped. Her purse was on top of her clothes but had no driver's license or other idee inside. There were, however, several pieces of very expensive jewelry.
The police were able to determine who she was because the jewelry was registered to her by Tiffany's and Van Cleef, Arpels. She was a stunningly beautiful girl, but as screwy as a bucket of bolts. No letter left as to why she decided to commit suicide. You never know .....

Walked across and back many years ago. It's a pretty good jaunt and a long way down.
Went under the GG many times on fishing boats. The tides rip through that narrow strait and the water is always rough.
They call it the Potato Patch.
Yes. When much younger, I'd take my single engine 21' wellcraft through there. Probably a couple hundred times. Not a big deal but every time, I said the prayer "please engine don't quit now." The kite surfers who play down in that chop are nuts.

Parked my truck near the jct. of Haight and Ashbury ST. and visited about 50 head shops. Smoked some killer weed with rather odd individuals in Panhadle Park, woke up in Golden Gate Park. Walking back to find my truck the next morning I saw a guy at a bus stop with a full beard wearing a dress and holding a briefcase.
Went to a small college in Marin County when I was in my early 20s. I drove school busses and charter trips out of San Rafael and drove the bridge often. My wife commuted into SF to work, over and back 5 times a week.
We couldn't wait to get back home and out of CA, even back then when it was still pretty nice. There was a lot to do and see, and I'm glad I lived there for almost two years.

Yes, it is interesting going over during a foggy spell.
Doubly so going under…
I went out on a buddies boat one time where it was so foggy you couldn’t see 20 feet. His radar was leading us out but my eyes were straining to make out any part of the bridge as I knew we must be getting close.
Mind you that’s a big sumbitch bridge, and I do NOT like not seeing where I’m going on the water.
One minute the foghorn was in front of us and the next minute it was coming from behind us. That creeped me out knowing we just passed under that monster and it was as good as invisible.
I didn’t unpucker for a few more hours when the fog burned off and I could see again.

She never made it past the bedroom door, what was she aiming for...? She's gone shootin..
Yep. One time. My only on road cycling experience. Started at the mouth of the Russian River. Down Hwy 1 Finished when we crossed the bridge. Took 3 days. We were seniors in high school and owned no spandex or road bikes. Cool trip. My ass was sore for a week.

Opened for use in 1937 86 years ago. While it is maintained meticulosly bridges still have a lifespan.. most of the time bridges are replaced because they can no longer support the flow of traffic over them. Only in Minnesota do they let them fall down. Who knows maybe movement along the San Andreas fault will take it out. You all think the bay area is a mess now wait when the GG goes it will be a real mess.
